Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I was a union carpenter that lived and worked in San Francisco, working on large multi million dollar jobs, to small residential remodels, and everything in between. Of course in a city like SF, with all the Victorian homes, the Edwardian homes, and all the commercial buildings, you are exposed to different scopes of work, therefore expanding your experience and knowledge of the craft. Because of this I consider myself fortunate when it comes to my 25+ years as a carpenter, (and at times a foreman and or a superintendent). I consider myself experienced and qualified for most small residential fixes, to a decent size kitchen or bathroom remodel, to a full on addition. I'm smart enough to know that I do not know everything, so if there's something I can't do, I have no problem letting someone know that. So with all that being said, I feel what truly sets me apart from a lot of the good carpenters/handyman that are available, is the fact that I take a lot of pride in the work that I do, so if a client isn't satisfied with a particular scope of work, that really bothers me. And I will do whatever it takes to make it right. Which means that I care about the clients home and realize how important that home is to them, and how much they value maintaining it and or upgrading it. In the process of all that, I strive to be a good value for them. Lastly, and equally important, I do my very best to do what I say I'm gonna do, which means I'll show up when I say I'm gonna show up, or I'll return your call because I said I would. I suppose I try do the right thing, not because I should, but because it's the right thing to do. The only other thing you should know about me, is that I enjoy what I do (for the most part). I really enjoy a persons reaction when they see all their ideas and plans become a reality, and manifests itself into the physical world via my hands, my mind, and my heart. I guess that's about it, 25 + years condensed down to a couple of paragraphs. Hopefully you get an idea of the type of person I am, and whether or not I'd be a good fit for your project.

FAQs

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

The one project that comes to mind is of a little project, but a huge challenge, that involved framing a wall in the middle of the room, with double doors in the middle of the wall. The reason this job was such a challenge, is that the double doors were "slab doors" and without a jamb. What that means is that the doors were "blanks", so there wasn't a hole drilled for the lockset, or the lockset assembly, the door was not mortised for the strike plate or the hinges, etc, etc. As double doors are, they must match and line up perfectly, or they will not open or close properly, or at the very least the reveals will be of different sizes from one door to the other. Plus, I didn't have the luxury of using the jamb as a template, because there wasn't a jamb. I'm not a door guy, nor do I own a "door template jig", and the only reason I mention this story is because of the overwhelming pleasure and satisfaction that I received from battling through the challenge, and being successful in my efforts. Not all jobs or careers are suited to stroke someone's ego as easily and as readily as my line of work. So, the jamb and doors were set and hung, and the owners were pleased with the results. By the way, the doors that the owners had found prior to the start of the project, were 30"x 80" (not to big) but were solid core, and so the overall weight of these doors were extremely heavy, and that just added a little more challenge to the overall project. By the way, the owners of the house were very kind and salt of the earth.
