Initially, I had a difficult time finding a moving company whiling to move me and my family from Northern Colorado to the Western Slope. Either they were out of state or local only. Moving Pros were ready to move anyone, anywhere! I was very happy with their availability and their prices were reasonable considering the enormity of the job we had. The crew were friendly yet professional and handled out belongings with care. Nothing was damaged in the move and I would definitely recommend them.

Jerry helped us get a 2-man crew, after-hours after a long day of driving from out-of-state. Min and Dominic moved us into a 2nd floor apartment in 2.5 hours. They were incredibly helpful, professional and strong. We appreciate their patience with us getting here and their quickness of moving. We couldn't have done it without them!

These guys were on time, professional, and hustlers! They definitely know what they’re doing. They managed to fit way more than we thought and clearly did their best to get in, get it done safely, and get it out so that it wasn’t more expensive. They get right to it, are friendly but aren’t small talkers. They just did it and did it well. Hire them! You’ll be satisfied. Great value and we’d use them again, but hopefully we’re never moving for a lonnnnng time.

AALL is by far and away the best moving company I have ever used. The guys are super nice and very professional, they truly went above and beyond. We had a pretty small move and as with any moving company there is a 2 hour minimum. When they showed up we didn't quite have everything in boxes so I told them they could just do the big stuff. They were done with that within an hour and went ahead and moved even the stuff that wasn't packed. They are without a doubt the best movers I have used and wouldn't consider anyone else for my future moves. Thanks guys!

Was a pleasure working with this crew. They were able to get everything done on time in a professional and careful manner, even after a schedule error! I highly recommend using them. Would use them again if I hadn’t moved out of state.

Joe was extremely responsive when I needed to get my pool table moved. Out of 5 companies I contacted, he was the quickest to respond and the easiest to work with. With short notice and odd hours being the only option for my schedule, 1Stop went well out of their way to accommodate me. Joe was extremely knowledgeable and professional when disassembling and moving the table, and took extra precautions to ensure the safety of my table. I would absolutely recommend Joe and 1Stop to anyone moving a pool table, or anything for that matter.

The movers did an excellent job! They were all extremely hard working individuals and very careful with our items and all were enjoyable to work with. We had a huge move (4600 sq ft home full of stuff!) and they worked 11 hours straight through super fast moving out of one home and into another home. (This was the 3rd time we have worked w/ Road Runner Moving in 7 years- 2 house moves and one office move). Definitely will hire again and highly recommend!!

Lifestyle moving is wonderful. These gentlemen were such professionals in wrapping and packing the truck. We had a whole household to load, and with their expertise, everything fit into one truck. They were very careful in everything they touched. They even brought extra materials to protect our floors and walls. They were able to help me with several last minute items. And we appreciated their friendly, respectful approach. I plan to hire them again with other moving and cleaning projects.

Because my daughter lives in another state and works very, very long hours, I wanted to lessen the pain of moving to a new apartment by paying for a mover to pack and move her possessions to the new apartment. Mario was extremely courteous on the phone and offered me options that I found appealing. After my phone conversation discussing the estimated service and costs, Mario sent a follow-up of the moving costs in an email which I forwarded to my daughter. The movers arrived on time on the designated day. My daughter informed me that they were very respectful, efficient and conscientious about all of the items in her apartment. She was moved in less time than originally allotted at a cost less than the estimate. She said that Mario called her after the move to solicit feedback, which she says "was a cherry on top of an already impressive experience." My daughter may be moving again in about a year, and informed me that she would certainly contact EZ Moving for this move. My daughter says she would definitely recommend EZ Moving to her friends.

I used Fischer Van Lines because there are so many other local moving companies that have one star reviews. I want to pass on the fact that Fischer made the small move I had very easy. Night before, they called to verify addresses and prices expected in detail. No surprises at either end of the move, and all were very courteous. Easy set up, easy confirmation, got called about an hour before scheduled pickup time to confirm and gave drivers directions, the workers were very polite, pleasant, efficient and were able to complete the move within the three hour minimum by hustling and not wasting any time. That doesn't imply that they rushed carelessly, they were very careful with my stuff and were just very efficient in what they did. At the destination, they were again fast but efficient and asked where everything should go and put it in the right places. I highly recommend Fischer Van Lines to anyone.

Moving away for the first time was a little scary for me. Never moved out of state before and like everyone i started online to search for a reputable company. After going through reviews and many websites i came across One World Vanlines and spoke to a young man named Dave B. From the first conversation to my delivery, Dave was with me through the whole time and even answered his phone on the weekend during my delivery. Awesome experience!

It has been our goal to move to another state since my husband and I wanted a more peaceful and greener place. So, last month we had the decision to finally take my Mom's house in Virginia and had to hire a moving company to give us a hand for all of our stuff. We contacted Transworld and they were courteous and polite. They gave us a reasonable quote and promised to do good with the move. We kind of trusted them right away since the guy really looked so convincing and sincere. As a result, they sure did keep their promise and the move concluded on time. Everything was on time..pick up and delivery Also, there were no damages.

I recently moved a rented truck full of items from my parents home in another state. On both ends of the move I had HORRIBLE experiences with movers: not showing up, rescheduling, not showing up again, overcharging, and it goes on and on. I was pretty desperate and extremely gun-shy when I called Broc and actually said to him, "Please don't let me down". And, they didn't. They showed up on time, which for me was a huge win. And they moved my stuff quickly, efficiently and safely. Since I had time left over in the hour I paid for, they offered to help me move other items and boxes that were already inside my house. They were friendly and personable . . . the kind of guys that you felt comfortable inviting into your home even though you didn't know them. I highly recommend them for any job you may have!

We were quite late in arranging help to unload our truck from an out of state move. Bright Moving Services was the only vendor who called us back and was very helpful in explaining their services and fees. Both Wade and Justin showed up on time and ready to work. They were very diligent and respectful, even asking our permission to take a short break. Because the apartment we moved into was not ready for us - neither repairs, cleaning nor painting had been completed - we had to stack all out items in the middle of the living room. They tried to make sure that we could access all essentials boxes, and even rearranged them when necessary. I would definitely use them again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
