I have hired Josh twice this summer to do big scale garden clean up, trimming of weeds and digging. He is timely, has a great crew with great attitudes and does the job in the scheduled time for the amount of the bid. I recommended his company to a neighbor who had a huge weed whacking and branch removal project. Josh has not let me down! He did a great job at the neighbor's home as well!

Hayden with Down to Earth Landscaping was wonderful to work with. He and his crew did an exceptional job! I am so pleased! He listened to and answered all my questions/concerns/requests. The job entailed flagstone, crusher fines, edging, polymeric sand, sod, and garden areas in the front of my house. I have had many many compliments from people in the neighborhood and those just walking by :) I'll add photos later when I get plants in the gardens.

I feel so fortunate to have found Jocelyn! I needed a gardener + landscaper + artist/designer and she was able to do it all with vision and heart. Such a pleasure to work with. She has transformed my outdoor space and given my home curb appeal.

Samantha's designs are top notch. She listens and provides what the customer requests and is very creative. She's getting less than 5 stars because she's not always timely in responding and I had to remind her a few times that we were still waiting for information. One of the services provided by her was obtaining quotes for comparison for the work. We only ever got one quote, so we had to use that contractor (no way to price compare), and when she came on-site during the project, she was wearing one of their logo shirts, as if she was an employee. That should have been disclosed up front - as we paid separately for her design services.

We are in the process of selling our home and needed to update some of our landscaping. Dylan and Steph came right out and gave us a reasonable quote. We were looking to spend a little less since we would be moving so they reworked the quote and trimmed a few minor projects to make it work. The yard looks amazing! They were very quick to get the work done and we will definitely use them again when the time comes! Thanks guys.

Danielle (Grateful Gardening) has done gardening work for me for at least a year now and I just love her. We talk about what plants would work and where. I don’t know plants well at all, and she does, so she does the choosing and planting. She also maintains the garden including some trimming of bushes, shrubs, and vines. I’m really happy with her work and like her too!

Naturescapes LLC was a blast to work with on our major backyard redesign. We had a general idea of what we wanted and Mike took it and designed a beautiful area with hot tub, paver patio, garden beds, plants and boulders. Mike and his crew did everything we asked without hesitation and were patient with the changes we had. Would definitely recommend.

Seamus and Paul are GREAT. They have done excellent work for me this summer, fixing two fences, clearing out bushes, and designing a tiered garden out of railroad ties. Fair price, hard work, a commitment to be environmentally friendly, and great attitudes. I highly recommend their work - you won't be disappointed.

We enjoyed working with Paul and his crew in converting an old farm pond into a graceful water garden. Paul has a great sense of good design as well as being pragmatic in accommodating design changes that inevitably arise during a job such as ours. We especially appreciated his ability to incorporate large boulders that were excavated during the work into very artistic garden features. Paul was accurate in his cost estimate and alerted us to potential changes in scope as the work went along. His workers are industrious and congenial and very neat in maintaining a clean work environment. His staff could have done a better job of communicating with us about the work schedule, but the final result was much more beautiful than we had imagined. We would certainly hire him again.

Working with Mary Pat and her team has been wonderful. She is exactly the person I was looking for. Over the years, my wife and I had put in several landscaping projects to create gardens on three sides of our house. We discovered that while we love our gardens, we do not possess the time and expertise to properly care for and maintain them. Mary Pat was able to come in with her team and quickly bring our gardens back to peak health. Our plants look fresh and healthy again! While most landscaping companies are focused on providing a one time, very expensive “put in a garden and hardscape” project. Mary Pat has really filled a need for us, by providing on-going high quality care and maintenance for our garden. She also has been our “garden contractor”- finding good subcontractors to provide us with other services we need such as rebuilding a retaining wall and changing irrigation. She is easy to work with and has been an excellent communicator. I highly recommend Great Fortune Design.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
