Walter has done two jobs for me so far: removed various pavers from my backyard and repaired my concrete patio. Both times he proved to be dependable and professional and did a great job. Very friendly and his prices are always fair.

I had a BIG powerwashing job: 2story home, white pvc fencing with moss and mold along with trex decking and belgian blue pavers on the front porch. The job was done with great attention to detail and care. The outcome is majestic: gleaming white soffits, pavers like new as well as sealed and sanded, decking fresh and house aglow! A FULL day of work for 2 guys that brought their equipment, set up, did the job and were courteous and gracious. I would recommend 100%. Now, I hired them for painting. An excellent value and easy electronic payment. These are the guys for any job! Even my neighbor came out and hired them too. You will be as impressed as I am. Stunning!!

Nertil and his company just did a small 9x9 paver's patio for us. He came the day we put out the request, and had the job completed within the week. Him and his friend were professional and worked with us on a price. The job was done in one day, and his communication was great. I'd highly recommend London to people for work they need done!

Alby does amazing work! He completed a gorgeous paver stone patio for me, complete with a propane fire pit. He was incredibly friendly and knowledgable during my first meeting with him. Throughout the entire process, Alby effectively communicated regularly. He worked incredibly hard during some extremely hot and humid days. He encouraged me to ask questions and spent plenty of time with me each day to update the progress. Alby is incredibly dedicated, detailed, and knowledgable about all things related to patios and landscaping. I'm extremely pleased and impressed with his work, as are friends and family that have seen his work. I will definitely be having Alby back for future projects. Highly recommended!

We are so pleased with the work done at our home by Allan Odell. We hired Allan to redo our front walkway, and his work exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning of the project he was very responsive, and explained everything about the project in detail. He responded to all of our questions, and advised us on the best option to fit within our budget but not sacrificing quality or aesthetics. We ended up with a concrete walkway with a paver border, and we couldn't be happier. We highly recommend Allan for all of your masonry needs.

As homeowners, one of the most difficult decisions we make is selecting a contractor to perform work at our home. We meet many contractors in our search. We do our best to evaluate each contractor that we meet for quality, knowledge, reputation, price, etc. but we recognize that we are not experts in any of these areas. Over the past 20 years of owning a home in Paramus, NJ, we have selected many contractors for a variety of large projects; Fencing (2), Deck; Landscaping, Irrigation, Swimming Pool, Shed, Patio, Additions (2), Roofing, Siding, Gutters, Pavers, Hardscape, Water Feature, Cabana/Shed. Looking back, some of or contractor selections have been poor at best. They have left us dreading to start the process for another project. Many, on the other hand, have been satisfactory therefore restoring our confidence in my ability to get through the selection process. Then, there are a select few that have exceed our expectations. The funny part is we knew, as soon as we met them, that they would. When you were outlining your project to them, they were professional, attentive to your needs and truly showed interest. They offered ideas for enhancements, not alternatives, to what you were looking for. They offered a fair price for the work to be performed as compared to the others you received. Building Paradise is one of these select few. Olman and his crew, exceeded our expectations at every level from design, to workmanship, to clean-up. Our project was to replace a 15 year old shed with a Cabana/Shed combination. While still needing a small portion for shed storage, we were looking for a private Cabana for our poolside guests to be able to change to/from their swimming attire that incorporates seating, towel storage, with separate cubbies to for multiple guests to store shoes, clothing and personal belongings. We wanted it to have complete privacy and also be elegant enough that our guests would want to use it. From the sliding glass door entry, to the tile floor, to the contrast painting, to the rustic pine ceiling with a lighted ceiling fan as an enhancements that Olman offered, the finished project well exceeded our expectations. Each and every one of our guests compliments the Cabana and I am proud to personally recommend Building Paradise Home Remodeling LLC. I might also add that we have used Olman and his crew on additional projects in 2016 and expect to call upon their services again in 2017.

I was very happy with the professionalism, honesty and attention to detail from Danny’s All Masonary Care. I received a quick and honest estimate followed by a quick start to my front walkway project. They helped me pick out very nice pavers that provided the right accent to my home. I will be using them again for my back patio without a doubt.

Elite Stone works did an amazing job on my back-yard patio. It was a combination of pavers and pea-gravel along with a cobblestone border. The rates were reasonable and the workmanship is excellent. They also had knowledge of a broad range of materials that could be used (I was considering several materials before I settled on the final product). The crew were professional and personable. They showed up on time and the work was done as promised. They left the work area in good shape each night. I would highly recommend Elite Stone!

What a wonderful experience. Marc came out to my home the very next day to discuss the work I requested. He came up with an amazing design for the front and back of my home which included many specimen plantings and a paver patio in the back. Marc and his team was efficient, knowledgeable and finished the job on time as he promised. We were extremely satisfied with EVERYTHING!!!

As the owner of a landscape supply company I deal with just about every landscape and mason contractor in the area. With that being said when it came time to have a patio installed at my own home I had a handful of the best companies to choose from. I am also very referenced based as I am sure most reading reviews on an app like thumbtack are. I am not willing to risk having a bad experience when some due diligence can show me reviews and real experiences from past clients that will mitigate the chance of having a bad experience. With that being said I talked to a few of their past clients (they've done almost every paver driveway/patio in Laurel Beach btw) one had actually been a friend who had Bluegrass install a giant patio to the tune of almost 1,200 square feet. After talking to them about how quickly the work was done and seeing a few pictures I decided Bluegrass would probably be who I would use. After having a few come to quote my project I ended up choosing Bluegrass for two reasons additional reasons. 1) They made me feel comfortable about their ability to do exactly what I wanted. 2) The price was very fair for the amount of work that was to be done (large patio of 700 square feet). That is a decision I do not regret. They came to the job day one with a huge and newer backhoe that I thought might be overkill but ended up being extremely efficient. Between digging out the area, doing the process base, and installing the pavers these guys were done in 3 days when I thoroughly anticipated a week! They were friendly, helpful, and extremely talented. If you want a company that is going to do excellent work and leave you without a worry give them a call.

James Soutar is extremely professional and a pleasure to work with. My husband and I had purchased a new build that was left with boulders, and poorly graded, rocky and weed ridden soil. Jim has transformed our yard into something we could have never imagined, all within our budget. Jim openly listened to all of our ideas and did not push us into anything we did not want. Jim is creative, but always has functionality and durability at the forefront of his mind. Jim is very meticulous and does all of the work himself. I would get daily e-mail or phone call updates regarding the progress of the job. Curb Appeal Landscape has built us two beautiful retaining walls, a paver walkway, and lighted pillars at the entrance to our walkway. The work is so well done that we are having Curb Appeal Landscape put in a rear patio, walkway, and stone fire pit. Jim has also graded our property, fixed a major drainage problem, and he will be planting a seed lawn in the spring. He is also very knowledgeable about different types of plantings and trees that work best for different types of landscapes. It is very obvious that Jim has a passion for creating gorgeous landscapes. We are the talk of the neighborhood to say the least! We would recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality, reliable, and creative landscape needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
