Deborah Dufel says, "Jefferson was referred to us by a neighbor to do Christmas lights. I asked if they did deferred maintenance work. He acknowledged they did. Let me tell you Jefferson and crew did our lights, weather stripping, replaced our gutters with 6 inch that we were told by others wasn't possible and replaced the wood around some of our windows. Turns out there was no weather sealing around the windows. It's the fine details, like where the gutters' leaders that go to the ground and connect to the underground tubes, truly the connections are pieces of art. My husband was so thrilled, he asked about the roof on a little shed. Perfect again. But wait there's more! We're busy making a list of deferred maintenance work because we trust Jefferson and crew and know it will be done right - the first time.. They truly mean: "no job is too small." I have and will continue to recommend JAC Home Improvement."See more

Eva N. says, "We needed to fix our 1st floor flooring, which was severely sagging.   After inspecting our crawl space we noticed our 100yr old floor joist and support beams were rotting away and could fail at any moment.  We hired Jimenez to demo all rotted wood, install new supports, reinforced existing members, & install new plywood & finish flooring .  Jimenez was a pleasure to work with as he & his crew were respectful and hard working.  They worked continuous days until the job was completed, and quality of work was good especially for our old house with imperfect walls & floors.    Price was also fair & competitive (got 3 quotes) and highly recommend for your next project.  We now feel safe  jumping on our new floor!"See more

Valeria B. says, "Diego and his team were professional and punctual from the 1st day when i got my free quote for a bathroom renovation. I shopped around but his delivery of information and knowledge about the work he was going to do to my bathroom convinced me he was the best choice. He did not disappoint and gave me a beautiful new bathroom after it was completely gutted. My bathroom was so outdated that we had 1 or 2 hiccups throughout the process which Diego communicated thoroughly and gave me options as a homeowner on how i wanted to proceed. His team prepped my house efficiently to avoid my daily from being so interrupted while they completed the work. Daily they arrived on time, cleaned up after the day was over and all of his employees were respectful and amicable . Diego also works with you and we ended up not only renovating our bathroom but our front porch as well. Their work is clean and neat which is necessary in a bathroom renovation. He also came daily to inspect the work was done properly and worked among his employees. My only regret is not having him for prior projects that i had completed in my property. Any future ones will definitely be with Diego and his company."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
