Harry was on time and professional. He assembled the kids' wooden play kitchen unit for us. The finished product looked very well done. He cleaned up the space after assembly and even offered to vacuum. It was a smooth transaction. We are having him come again to do a few other jobs.

Jim was awesome, he met me at Home Depot and gave me recommendations for good ceiling fans. Got everything installed including him having to crawl in my attic to fix a loose wire. Would highly recommend him and he loves dogs! Big plus!

Overall it was a good experience with hiccups along the way. There was some miscommunication between the main office and field employees even though the information was properly relayed during booking the job. Price ended up being $50 more than quoted with different stories about why there was an added charge (cleaners stated there was a basement that was not mentioned during booking even though I stated 2 stories but main office they told me it was because my husband needed the boiler room cleaner, but all the cleaners did was sweep a 5x5 space). Not really sure what the facts were but the job was done.

Dimension Restoration & Construction is a dream to work with. I approached Ishita when my wife and I purchased land in West Hampton. Since it was a small lot, I wanted to maximize the use of the space while remaining true to the architectural vision of similar homes in the area. In addition, I wanted to blend my love of industrial modern with mid-century style while finding a way to include modern conveniences. I immediately knew after my first meeting with Ishita and Mike that they understood my vision and that the company was much more than a general contractor. They very quickly came up with plans to match our design and introduced me to all the suppliers that we would need to realize the final vision. Dimension was on top of the ordering process and managed all the materials from the start. I was also very impressed with the team of project managers assigned to my project. Unlike many general contractors, Mike and his team initiated a high and consistent level of communication with me as both client and designer. His entire staff was responsive to any request and I felt like I could contact them with any detail, big or small. Attention to detail is important to me and Dimension didn’t disappoint. From the plate and drain covers to the high gloss cabinetry and appliances, the team was there to manage each aspect of this project. I can be a demanding client but I always felt that Dimension was on my side. There were several times during the renovation that I was out of town and I didn’t worry that work would continue in my absence. I felt completely confident in the team and knew that I could trust them to watch over the details. Even down to the final walk-through and punch list, Dimension stayed with me and responded quickly. Additionally, the billing process was simple and painless. Although the major phase of my renovation is complete, I plan to use them for some small projects. If you are looking for high design and attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend Dimension Restoration & Construction.

I have had 2 different rooms done-a small kitchen and a huge great room. The large one was done in 6”x36” porcelain planks and it llloks awesome. What an outstanding job. Grout color, spacing, overall quality of workmanship was top notch. Same with kitchen. Took his suggestion on a collar much different than I was thinking and I love it. Both rooms get compliments all the time. Neither were easy but you would never know to look at them now.

My husband and I just moved and I started getting sick right as we were packing. We realized we were going to have to go easy where we could, which meant hiring someone to clean after we had moved out our furniture instead of doing it ourselves. Jim Di'Dio worked with me on every particular: price, space, areas needing special attention or no attention and time. On top of that he was professional and so friendly and outgoing. I 100% recommend their services, you will be well cared for.

We had an excellent experience working with Dave Rapp. He was communicative, punctual and super easy to work with through out the project. There were no hidden fees or surprises after the initial quote. His attention to detail was exceptional and as new parents we really appreciated his cleanliness of work space. We would enthusiastically recommend working with him on large or small projects.

AJ helped with a difficult water heater replacement that needed to be installed in a limited space. He was prompt and professional. Cost of the job was extremely reasonable, especially considering the extra man hours required for some unexpected setbacks we encountered. I would be happy to call on him for future service.

I hired Home Facelifters to turn my basement into an apartment. At first I didn't think this was possible, and another contractor actually told me that it wouldn't be possible. I am so glad that I met with Joe, his ideas were exactly what I needed to turn this small space into an efficient kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Everything is beautiful and was done on budget, and on time. We couldn't be happier with the outcome and will be using Home Facelifters when we build our new deck this summer.

I hired Ed Wallace to build and install a custom cabinet to fit a tricky space in my master bathroom. Ed first looked at the space and gave me some options as to what would work. Ed is a terrific communicator and a problem solver. He explained the options in detail, with careful consideration of the space, budget, and materials. He built and installed a beautiful cabinet in my master bathroom that maximized the available space and matched it to the already existing cabinets. Ed's work is precise, neat, and very clean. He takes all the necessary precautions to make sure all things go well. He is always thinking two steps ahead. While Ed was completing the custom cabinet, it came up that he also does tile work. I was looking for someone to take on two back splashes, one in my kitchen, and a second in the master bathroom. Each backsplash had some unique features and I wanted to use a glass tile in the kitchen and a marble tile in the bathroom. Ed was easily adaptable to each job, type of tile, and the unique space. Ed is a consummate professional, he is a terrific communicator, does great work, and comes through on everything he says.

One of the several projects we hired Steve to do was to renovate our 40 year old kitchen. Quite an undertaking. The room had to be completely gutted and in the end we have an incredible kitchen. Steve removed an outdated room and transformed it into not only a beautiful room, but an area with warmth and comfort for Bob and I. The cabinets installed were custom made by Steve. My favorite part of this room is the custom made kitchen island. We have a smaller kitchen and we enjoy sitting there reading, talking and just enjoying the space. Steve suggested enlarging the window over the sink to give us the perfect view of our wooded back yard. This was just one of the suggestions that enhanced the positive outcome of this project. If you want excellent craftsmanship and a person you can totally trust in your home environment, we highly recommend considering A plus RENOVATIONS to do your next project.

A big thank you to Gilmar for coming out so promptly for an estimate and giving me an excellent price. I hired him right away because he is so personable and easy to work with. A few days later he came out to do the initial job of cleaning the front space, landscaping and laying down mulch. I have never had the experience here of someone who would actually do what you ask so quickly. The front of my house has never looked so good. I do not regret hiring him on the spot.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
