About this pro

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I enjoy helping people who have tried guitar many times realize that with proper coaching and some practice, it's really pretty easy and lots of fun. Music and guitar lessons are extremely relaxing if the teacher and studio have the intention of being a sanctuary. Many of the folks that come in for lessons find that it de-stresses them from "work & life." Having a fun guitar lesson and chatting with a patient, understanding teacher makes all the difference. Having so many people come in the door stressed or frustrated and leave with a smile makes me feel accomplished and grateful. I am blessed to be able to do what I do. I share the beauty of guitar and music -- it's truly a win-win for all!

Greg is very knowledgeable about the Guitar and very personable on our first lesson. I'm moving forward with additional lessons and excited to learn how to play guitar!

I only took a handful of lessons with Gregg, but I have no complaints with my experience. Gregg is a consummate professional, and clearly very knowledgeable. I came into lessons with a couple years of playing experience, and I was still able to learn some very helpful things in my short time taking lessons with Gregg. I also really appreciated that he had instruments and equipment available in his studio. Lastly, he offered me a favorable rate for signing up via Thumbtack, which I also appreciated. I ultimately went in a different direction, as Gregg mentioned that he might not have the capacity to teach me certain songs from beginning to end. As this is one of my primary learning goals, I switched instructors. Even still, I give credit to Gregg for being upfront and honest with me. Overall, he's a good guy and teacher, and I wouldn't rule out returning to him at some point in the future.

    Still in search of...
Gregory appears to be a great guy. We scheduled the one lesson to determine if we were compatible. Unfortunately, he is not positioned to provide what I need in an instructor. I am looking for a jazz instructor. Someone who performs jazz, knows jazz theory and can convey their knowledge and experience practically. Gregory has offered to refer a couple of instructors who fit the bill. However, if whoever reads this knows someone, I would highly appreciate the referral.

    Starting Lessons Again
Great experience! Super cool studio in the house and all the resources right there. Gregg is very easy to talk to and helps you pick up where you left off! I had previously took lessons but took a break during my move to the D.C. Area.

I have played guitar for a long time prior to taking lessons. I learned more helpful and fundamental tips in the first 40 with minutes with Gregg, than I had in the past 10 years teaching myself (incorrectly). Gregg is very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Would highly recommend for anyone at any skill level!

I took several lessons with Gregg, and I can attest that he is a talented guitarist as well as a passionate teacher who listens to his students and wants to help you achieve your goals. He encourages practice, but does not berate you when life overtakes things. His years of work as a teacher (as well as his own learning history) have helped him to figure out what really works, and he is excited and patient in sharing that with his students. He also has many guitars in his studio, which means you don’t have to bring yours with you if it is not convenient. In addition to the instruction, Gregg volunteers a lot of his time with Guitars Not Guns (www.guitarsnotguns.org) – a program that uses music as a catalyst to encourage children and teens to use their creativity to foster personal development and to help divert them from self-destructive influences such as drugs, alcohol and gang-related activities. They get free lessons, and if they complete the program they get to keep the guitar! The program’s goal is to reduce gun violence and other destructive behaviors in our city. I recommend supporting businesses run by people like Gregg, who provides great instruction and also works to make a positive impact in our community!

Gregg has significantly shortened the time it would take me to transition from beginner to intermediate guitarist. His approach is practical and systematic. Fantastic studio. Good location. Nice guy. Easy to work with.

First guitar lesson ever. 1) the studio is a great space - very comfortable, and inviting. Gregg was very personable, and easy to talk to - but most of all patient with my bumbling fingers, and provided a lot of great information for a beginner. I look forward to our follow-ups.

I went from not know how to playing one note to being able to play multiple popular R&B songs in just months. His approach to teaching helps you become a successful guitar player and not just good at playing 1 or 2 songs. He helped me with my first performance during my wedding. This was only after 8 months of playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs7WR1FdlWk

Gregg brought back the passion to my love of playing guitar. I started to play guitar probably 20 years ago but never took a lesson so I wasn't that great. My wife surprised me with a package of 10 lessons with Gregg and it took me one lesson to realize again how much I love it. My skills are improving so much from one lesson to another and I'm looking forward to those lessons like a little kid (which unfortunately I'm not :) ). My work, like many others in DC, is crazy and this is also kind of my therapy for all the stress. There is no doubt that Gregg is a great guitar player with an amazing understanding of the theory and music. But he always puts himself in your shoes as a student and gives you those great tips that you never figured out or never thought of before. As a teacher, Gregg has the perfect balance of kindness, patience, and enthusiasm. I always thought that I'm just a moderate guitar player but now I'm starting to feel that I can actually play, and I'm excited to continue my lessons with Gregg and see how good I can get.

Gregg has an excellently developed and dynamic course for anyone interested in learning to play guitar. I always feel my playing has made significant improvement after a lesson. Can't beat the value! Friendly, dynamic, finely tuned and individualized lessons!

Great guitar instructor! Is very clearly a guitar master!! But understands how to help you establish a solid foundation so that you can one day master guitar too. Easy to talk to, listens to what you want to learn and finds the best way for you to learn it! Flexible and always on time. Clearly very passionate about playing and teaching guitar. Reasonably priced (I suggest the package of 5 sessions) and excellent location! Sessions are usually about 40-45 minutes.

I have been playing violin for 13 years, so I have taken my fair share of private lessons, and Gregg is as good as any teacher I have ever had. I have only been playing a short while, but I feel like I have progressed so much with Gregg's help. His lessons are always fun and laid back. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

I've been taking beginner acoustic guitar lessons this summer with Gregg. He is patient, upbeat, and great at putting together a flexible program that will meet your particular goals. The studio is conveniently located in DC, and guitars available to use during lessons so you don't need to lug your instrument around town.

I really enjoy classes with Gregg, he is a great individual. He is very patience and opened to teach whatever I want to learn. Gregg also has this program Guitar for Guns - in which he helps foster child through music - which I consider very laudable and says a lot about the person. I would definitely recommend him for guitar classes.

Gregg is a great instructor with a passion for music and community. He is easy to work with and very patient with beginners such as myself. He's extremely flexible with availability and schedule which is a huge plus for someone on the go.

Q&A

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Each summer I take time to attend a guitar workshop. I love learning new styles and new approaches to playing guitar and other forms of music. It's lots of fun to meet other musicians and share the magic of music together. I will always consider myself a student, learning something new each and every day. Music is an amazing language that everyone understands and can continue to learn throughout their lives.

What types of customers have you worked with?
I teach guitar to complete beginners, long time veterans, songwriters looking for guidance, groups looking for fun activities, and to folks who want to get out and perform on stage for open mics or paid gigs. I use a simple personalized approach to coach each student toward their goal without putting unnecessary pressure on the student.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I hosted an open mic where my students performed the songs that they have learned to play and some original music. We collected donations for the children's music charity www.guitarsnotguns.org. My students and I had fun playing music and we helped make our community a better place. We use the music to help bring music to at-risk and foster care youth. We are very much looking forward to having our next open mic fundraiser!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Just like there are different guitarists and styles of music there are different approaches to teaching guitar and music. It's always a good idea to try a few teachers to be sure that you like the teacher's approach, attitude, location and availability. The better the fit, the better your personal progress on your instrument will be.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Teaching guitar is fun and rewarding but it requires quite a bit of time outside of just sitting down for a 40 minute lesson. There is paperwork, lesson planning, scheduling, studio cleaning, instrument care/maintenance, and cost of supplies for office and instruments. It's a full-time job with overtime every week.
