I am a native English speaker with a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge and I would like to help you improve your English. My goal is not just to teach you English, but to make sure you don’t forget it! I use the following strategies to help adult ESL students learn and remember:
- Content-based learning. Study grammar by looking at an interesting topic, not memorizing a list of rules.
- Cognitive engagement. We're not just going to do fill-in-the-blank worksheets. Move beyond knowledge and comprehension to apply, analyze, design and create.
- Connecting the lesson to your life. Draw on your background knowledge and share your opinion.
- Emphasizing recall. We will constantly go back to what you learned in previous classes to reinforce and build on it.
Many tutors and language schools will determine your level and then follow a book or curriculum that is the same for every person. This can end up being a waste of your time and money. Working with me, you will get truly individualized lessons. I analyze your pronunciation, tenses and grammar for errors, and then create lessons that target your weaknesses. I will send you an evaluation to complete before our first lesson, so I can figure out what you need to work on ahead of time and be ready to help you from the moment we meet. I customize our activities in class so they relate to the topics you think about at work, in college, or in your free time (health economics, history of Asia, cooking, etc.) and target the skills you are trying to develop (making oral presentations, reading textbooks, writing papers, having casual conversations, etc.).
I have taught 475 hours of ESL classes to students at The Family Place, Teaching House, and The Next Step Public Charter School. I have experience working with adults of all ages and levels from a variety of countries and socioeconomic backgrounds. I also speak Spanish, French and Chinese, so I know what it's like to learn a language, what works and what doesn't.
I love teaching ESL, and it is important to me to constantly be improving. I am always looking for new and better activities to do in class. I stay up-to-date with the research on what works for memorization and best teaching strategies so that my style is fresh and effective. If you are ready to get better at English, please contact me!
