About
I place an emphasis on technical principles and specific body and breath based exercises that achieve tangible results for the singer. I base my teaching on the principles laid out in Richard Miller's book The Structure of Singing.
I love hearing the progress people make and seeing the expression on singer's face's when they sing high notes with ease, and they hear a new, richer and more beautiful sound in their own voice.

Tom is an amazing voice teacher. Over the years, I had done a lot of informal folk singing, but hadn't sung in a long time and hadn't had any proper training. In addition to teaching me proper techniques for breathing properly, expanding my range and improving my tone, the music he used in teaching introduced me to a whole new world of classics, which were a delight to sing. Tom has the gift of creating a safe, supportive and informal environment, while at the same time having high standards for the work. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Tom is wonderful! I had not been singing for many years when I contacted him--my range was significantly limited, and I'd lost any technique I'd acquired during my previous training in high school and college. In a few weeks, Tom helped me improve my range (almost back to what it was!), and reviewed proper breathing and enunciation--I've even learned a bit about the history of the music I am singing. He is exceptionally patient, and very knowledgeable about the voice. Tom has a great sense of humor, and makes lessons fun--I can't recommend him enough!

I had my first lesson today and loved it. I learned a great deal and had a happy time doing it.

Tom Colohan is a superb voice teacher. My lessons with him are avocational, and I look forward to them as one of the high points of each week. As a professional singer himself and a highly successful chorale director, Tom has a deep knowledge of vocal technique and of the classical song literature. Although I had previously studied with another of Washington's leading voice teachers, I have found that Tom's lessons have improved my technique and musicality, as well as introducing me to new art song and operatic literature that is expanding my musical knowledge. Tom is unfailingly supportive and encouraging, but in a friendly and gentle way he insists on vocal and interpretive excellence. In other words, although he knows that for me studying voice is largely recreational, he takes my singing seriously, pushes me to be the best I can and doesn't cut any corners. I would recommend him to any singer regardless of the student's level of experience or objectives in studying voice.

I have had many voice teachers and found Tom to be OUTSTANDING.. I had always had some trouble with my breath which other teachers were unable to break through. Tom gave me the foundation I needed to overcome that roadblock and that foundation has opened many doors in my singing..
His teaching is clear and fun and effective. He is great at finding the instructions which work for each student.. if one approach does not work he is flexible and smart in finding other approaches and growing in his understanding of each student and what each needs.
I have moved to the other coast but i find his teaching is still helping me and i continue to find new meaning in things he taught me. Just tonight I noticed my voice was not steady but my breath was there. I remembered things he said about vowels and found new ways to make the vowels consistent and steady the voice. Since i moved I have seen in others' faces some of the tensions i held and still hold. These faces have proved to be effective mirrors and seeing them makes me smile (his teaching is liberating).
He works with a wide repertoire with ease .... I took lessons for several years.. He is great as a coach supporting continued growth, and is a good troubleshooter for more specific goals with the voice. I am very grateful to Tom for opening my voice and for the teaching that keeps taking me new places long after my work with him.
