I hired Gilberto to replace the tile shower and tile floor and to repaint a guest bathroom. He was professional, polite and couteeous during all of our interactions. He arrived for work each day on time when he said he would. He cleaned up his work area and removed debris when he said he would. I intend to hire Gilberto again for some additional painting and will recommend him to others. His pricing is reasonable and fair.

Eddy impressed me at every stage of the project, from the prompt estimate to his last day of work. He suffered several days in my terrible bathroom: the constantly barking dog, wicked heat, and multiple obstacles. My bathroom had tiles from the 1930s, and Eddy found at least 3 very unusual plumbing/building choices (weird wall material, toilet roughin too close to the door, duct tape inside the bathtub!). This job was much more difficult than he expected I'm sure, and another contractor might have found excuses to stay away ... Eddy worked six long days on a total renovation AND had a text message conversation with me a couple days later to answer a couple more questions. He was also great at communicating about problems and decisions when they came up -- no bad surprises! Eddy will work really hard to make sure you get the bathroom you want, at the cost he tells you to expect.

Rob had the unenviable job of repairing a very poor kitchen tile installation. He was professional, on time, and his work was excellent. I would highly recommend him and use him for future flooring work.

Rick came in and helped clean up a big mess that was left behind from someone else. He helped fixed my cabinets, my tile, and he redid my kitchen walls which were previously ruined. He put a silver texture on them and they were amazing. He is extremely reliable

Awsome work, really! I'm an electrical contactor in NYC and I can truly say that Carlo and his partner are true craftsmen. They are a turn key company, from demo to cleanup. I met them though a friend who had their condos renovated, that was helpful. Their carpentry, tile work, painting is flawless. They finished my kitchen snd laundry room. Now that I have found such good people I will be using them for my next phases, the bathrooms. Good luck with your project everyone Sencierly Tony

We wanted a new tile back splash. We bought the materials and decided on Evan because he had all 16 positive reviews at that time. Now he has mine positive review as well. He has done a very nice job. There was about 42 sqf of tile, combining two different types of tile. I hope I could be able to describe how perfect tile job it has been. He repaired first the wall because when Home Depot workers teared down the old back splash they left a couple of holes on the wall. And then he did his magic job with the tiles. Very well done!!!

Jose was great. He came and assed the bathtub tile repair job and then completed the next day. High quality in a short time. We also had him repair the tile on the bathroom floor as it was leaking. He went out of his way to go all over town to find the right tile as well. He and his co-worker were very respectful of our home and cleaned up nicely before he left. I would hire him again for tile work.

I would recommend Fernando to anyone looking for any type of tile repair and/or installation. He was very knowledgeable and fair with his pricing. For the work that he does, he is extremely reasonable. My job was a full bathroom remodel that involved travertine that had to be laid in mud. This is a difficult job to do because you have to make sure that there is no uneven parts during the installation. He did a great job with this. There was one mistake made in the pattern of the tile that I pointed out to them during the job. He immediately fixed the issue and corrected the problem. I only have two areas that I was a little unhappy, but they were minor. The first is that they didn't keep their work area very clean. They cut the tiles and mixed the cement on my covered patio in the back. I have slate down as the flooring for the patio. They ended up getting some mud on the tiles outside and I had to work to get it off. My suggestion to Fernando and his team is to be more aware of the area you are working in and make sure you don't make an excess mess in that area and always be careful when mixing mud or thinset in a finished area. The other area I wasn't happy with was the grouting. This is the last part of the job and one of the most important to give the job a great finished look. It was not Fernando that finiished the grout, it was one of his workers and he was very sloppy with the grout. There are areas on the bathroom where the grout is caked on and it doesn't look good. They should have taken more time to make sure the grout was thoroughly wiped to finish the job the right way. He also fixed a few issues in 2 other bathrooms and did a great job there. He did the work personally. The only thing I would warn others of is to make sure you supervise closely, especially if it is not Fernando himself doing the work, to make sure it gets done to your expectations. His worker is the one who made the mistakes. I did not ask him to correct the grout because it was a few days after the job that I noticed the areas where the grout was caked on and he was already finished with the job at that point. Also, make sure you get an estimate in writing. We had a little disagreement at the end of the job on price because I thought he had quoted a slightly different price. However, I was very happy with the work and he met me half way in the discrepancy, so I was happy with that. Overall, he did great work. The installation of the time was excellent. The detail work at the end was not up to par, but as long as you are aware and monitor the grouting process closely, I would recommend Fernando for any tile project you may have!

I was very pleased with the work that Gregg did on our bathroom tile job. He was very honest and upfront with the potential challenges of the job, but still did it with great excellence. After completing the first job, I contacted him to do another project. While putting the bid together, he came across some information that there was a less expensive way to do the job that would mean someone else would get the work and not him. He could have kept the information to himself, however he called me and gave me the info so that i could save a little money. That kind of honesty and integrity is rare. I would highly recommend Gregg for any construction, handyman, remodeling jobs and I will use him again in the future.

John performed a complete remodeling of our master bath in which he took in an adjoining closet into the existing bathroom roughly doubling the size of the bathroom. This involved relocation of the toilet waste line, installation of lines for a double sink and relocation of the shower pan drain. The bathroom walls and ceiling were down to the studs and joists. John offered great ideas in terms of the redesign and the work was performed to the highest standards. John was on site every day and the work was performed on schedule and on budget. We are extremely happy with the job and the end product. John's attention to detail and satisfying the customer is excellent. We would recommend John McFarland without hesitation.

Nance Arce´ AKBD from Naturally Creative Inc. helped my wife and me design our new master bath. It was a wonderful experience. She took into account all our wants and needs. The contractors she used were very professional and the results were great. There were a few glitches (as in any construction project), but everything was resolved to our satisfaction. A special acknowledgement goes to Myles Schell the project manager and head of Expert Tile Services Inc. They did a super job on the tile and the shower stall is fantastic.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
