My first personal home project with Kozak was my guest bath, not only was I quoted in the same day as my RFQ, they finished my project extremely quickly and I am beyond happy with the results. I really enjoyed working with Kozak. He’s a one-man team, which means things took longer than expected. Even though the job was bid out, small changes along the way added up to more costs, so it’s crucial to be clear and put everything in writing upfront. Be specific about what you want and make sure it’s all in the contract. Vague instructions will end up costing you.
Jack is great—he’s quiet, loves his coffee and smoke breaks, and as the only person doing the work, he’s earned it. I’m beyond pleased with how he turned my design into reality. However, a few things were forgotten along the way (another reason to have everything on paper). For example, we ended up with extra materials that weren’t needed, like a shower door that no longer fit the space. This added extra costs that could’ve been avoided.
Kozak has his opinions on how things should be done and might cut a few corners, but overall, the job was well done. His English is a bit broken, but he always kept a smile on his face. Despite a few missteps, I’d rather work with someone like him than a big-name contractor who over-promises and under-delivers. We were in a tough spot after another so-called “contractor” walked off the job due to personal issues. Kozak stepped in, showed up when he said he would, and followed through with my designs and directions.
While the job took longer than expected, I believe that was due to some personal issues on his end (just a guess), but the quality of his work is impressive. It’s not textbook perfect, but it has an artistic touch that you don’t always get from licensed contractors. In fact, I don’t think a licensed contractor would have done the job as well as Jack did.
He’s worth hiring, even if you’re required to go with someone licensed.
