About
Hello and thank you for the inquiry... I have been coaching/teaching for 30 years (Golf Academies, Schools, Resorts, and Private Golf Clubs). I am fortunate to have been mentored by several of the game’s most recognized players and coaches. I played competitively through college (UNC-Chapel Hill, 85’-89’) and for a couple of years professionally before redirecting my path coaching/teaching, something I have always had a passion for. When I looked back through the years of playing competitively, it dawned on me that I spent as much time helping my friends and teammates with their games as I did my own, so the transition to coaching was a no-brainer… and I am grateful to have turned a passion into a profession.
And I get as much enjoyment helping someone break 90 for the first time as I do with helping someone break 70…. Hopefully we’ll have the chance to meet, and I can help you with your game
All the best for good golf!
Jim Sowerwine, PGA

I was able to meet with Jim three times recently before returning to our home up north. What I really liked is how Jim was able to shape the instruction to the needs of the student (me in this case).
Jim doesn't hurry, is extremely patient with the student and listens as well as he coaches. I particularly liked the follow-up each time as Jim emailed a set of summary notes complete with what we worked on, points of emphasis, and reminders.
I would hire Jim in a minute if/when we are in the area again as I would like to continue the instruction at some point after putting my learning's into play.
For all of you on the "fence" (to take a lesson or not) - do not hesitate to hire Jim once you decide to improve your game.

Jim is an experienced easy to talk to professional instructor who takes the time to have a dialogue with you about your game before rushing in to correct something. He balances the practical with technical aspects of teaching always tuned in to your needs. Jim clearly explains and demonstrates what he suggests will improve your game. He is also very generous with his time, e.g. going slightly beyond your session time to make sure you are comfortable with the takeaways. Jim’s post session notes, sent via email, are a clear and concise summary of the main learning points and drills. Highly recommended for both beginners and advanced golfers.
Details: Advanced • 65 years or older • General improvement • As recommended by instructor • 45 minutes • As recommended by instructor • Morning (9am - noon) • Morning (9am - noon) • As soon as possible • Conducting initial research • I travel to the golf instructor

I totally enjoyed my short game lesson with Jim. My first lesson was on the proper way to chip. He explained thoroughly every step involved from the practice swing, to setup to the complete swing. The day after the lesson I received a follow up email from him detailing everything we did during the lesson. I would highly recommend Jim as an excellent instructor.

Recently took my first lesson with Jim. Found all the reviews that I have read posted on thumbtack to be spot on. Excellent instructor, very easy to communicate with and seems to have an abundance of ideas on how to get you swinging the club better. I would highly recommend scheduling a lesson with Jim. Cant think of any reason not to schedule another lesson in the future.

After playing golf for 25 years my handicap has gone up in the last few years. With that I was losing my envy to play. Already after two lessons, Jim has helped me to correct my swing easily and given me back the fun of the game. I look forward to continuing with him and I highly recommend him. F. S.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Currently my hourly rate - $130
Playing lesson rates, group lesson rates and corporate rates are also available upon request
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Every lesson starts with helping my client feel at ease and as comfortable as possible. I have been 'in the shoes’ of the student many times, so I know the importance of feeling at ease with the instructor. I always try to keep the learning process fun and give just enough information so the student leaves with a clear understanding of what they need to work on as well as how to efficiently practice on their own. We also do a video recap of the lesson to help keep you on track moving forward. And video may be used on an as needed basis or if the client would like to see their swing(s); these too may be emailed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I played 4 years of D1 college golf (UNC-Chapel Hill), I played professionally 2 years, I was personally mentored for how to play the game by Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gardner Dickenson, Tony Pena, Bob Toski, and Davis Love II, and many more... When my career path changed to follow my passion for helping others, I was again fortunate to be mentored by some of the best instructors/coaches in the game, including: Jim Flick, Martin Hall, Rick Smith, Mike Malaska, and Henry Young.
