Was extremely impressed with max, his ability to mount my two big screen tv's with ease was a treat. We were just moving into our new home and not only was max on time , but he pitched in and help us putting our bed frames together, and unloading the truck without being asked! Plan to use max a lot as I have found out he is a handyman as well, what a find.!

We would highly recommend Jack for handyman projects around your home. He is all of the things I commented above and wouldn't hesitate to call him again. He is a true professional at what he does and it shows in his work. I can't get photos right now, but he put together a very difficult buffet for my kitchen that required a lot of work but he finished in less than an hour and the work is perfect. He also put together a 4 drawer dresser that was done with an equal outcome. Please use Jack for your projects....you won't be disappointed.

Jaime is professional, prompt, and knowledgeable. He installed a ceiling fan and closet light fixture to existing wiring. His price was excellent. If your electrical job is simple (as in, you could possibly do it yourself but don't want to electrocute yourself, fall off the ladder, or blow a fuse) and you don't want to spend a ridiculous amount on licensed electricians (there is no reason you should pay 2-3 hours labor or $100+ for a ceiling fan install if the wiring is there) , Jaime is perfect. He guarantees his work for 90 days. He does handyman work and I am making a list of tasks I will hire him for next.

Don't hesitate to hire All Handy LLC!! Anthony responded quickly, squeezed me in despite his busy schedule, showed up on time, and completed the work much faster than expected. His rates are reasonable and his work was impeccable. Not sure what else you could want in a handyman!! I'm already thinking of other jobs around the house for him to do!

Alejandro was fantastic! He communicated throughout the quote and on the day he was to do the job. Once he arrived, he completed the job that same day and everything was done very professionally and the entire area was left clean. I would recommend him to anyone who needs a reliable handyman.

I contacted Fabien Lewis the owner of T&F Painting to provide an estimate to paint my recently purchased home. I needed to have every room in the house painted. Fabien and his team were professional, punctual, and personable. The job they performed exceeded my expectations. They took care, they gave professional advice on the job. They went above and beyond the painting and literally helped me to move boxes during my move. They completed minor handyman work, and was always very respectful of my property. I would recommend Fabien and team to anyone needing to have paint work completed. I give this company 5 stars.

Wow! Dennis is absolutely the best handyman ever! When I first contacted him, I had what I thought to be maybe a half a day's work but by the date of my appointment I thought I had more than a full days work, but Dennis completed every single thing on the list plus a couple of other things I came up with while I was showing him around. He did everything perfectly and professionally and he even cleaned up after himself!

I hired John to remove the popcorn ceiling in my family, dining and living room and then to paint the ceiling in those areas. I love to give five stars, however in this case I cannot. Jhon seems to be a very nice and respectable man. But, yes there is a but...When I hired John he told me the job would take two and a half days. After he started the work he told me he wanted to finish on the second day. I told him that was great he could stay as late as he needed to complete the work. I did my best to stay out of his (and his co-workers way) and wait until he was ready to show me the completed project. When day two was complete and John showed me the 'finished' product I was disappointed. Where the ceiling and the walls met there were blotches of white paint and or caulk along the top of the colored walls, including an accent wall that will be very hard to match with new paint. I am not a handyman, but have painted a couple of rooms in my house that looked much better than the job he was paid for when I had finished mine. Also, other professionals that have painted in my home did NOT disappoint when they were done. I asked him if he could come back to touch up the areas I was not happy with the following day (a Wednesday) and he could not. We agreed to have him come by the following Monday to finish the job as I was unavailable during the weekend. It took only about 45 minutes to touch up the areas in need. I just believe when it comes the work that a true professional would have seen this and not have expected his customer to accept the 'final' product he showed me. I would have been embarrassed to leave my walls in that condition for long. Also, when I set up the interview to discuss the work and get an estimate we were supposed to meet a 4 pm. At 4:30 I called Jhon to see if he was still coming and he indicated he was. He arrived about 15 minutes later. Also, both days when he was working on the job he was over 30 minutes late day one to buy supplies and about 45 minutes late day two because of transportation issues. The day he came to touch up the paint he arrived on time. I wish John success. After touching up the area that needed it...the ceiling looks good. I did not shop around so I can't speak for the value for the money although from what I read it seemed like a fair price for a job that is well done.

I know Jason for many years and I am very happy with his service. He is professional plumber and also does every possible handyman job. I have many rental properties and every few weeks there is a problem. It is very difficult to find in Florida a plumber and a handyman you can count on. Many people don’t come on time or don’t come at all. Many do sloppy job and overcharge. Jason is not one of them. When I call, he will arrive immediately and fix the problem. I can always count on him. He will be on time and he will do the job perfectly. He also clean after he finishes the work. A friend of mine had an emergency in the middle of the night. She called him and he came right away to fix the broken pipe. I recommend Jason as a plumber and a handyman. He is changing a very reasonable price.

Mike was easy to work with, professional and knowledgeable. He completed the work in a timely manner and did not make a mess. Most importantly he knew his stuff, too often people label themselves as handyman but don’t really have the knowledge. I will definitely use Mike again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
