I was the tournament director for a rugby tournament with 23 teams from all over the state on May 21st. I got in touch with Carte Blanche to hire a DJ. Not only was the DJ there 2 hours before he said he would, he stayed until the tournament was over which was running late. Dave Stiles(DJ) recognized the crowd and played the music he knew they would like. He was very friendly and helped us out tremendously with the use of his PA system. The crowd loved it and the rugby tournament was a huge success. Thank you Carte Blanche, we will definitely be calling back!

I highly recommend Kaleidoscope Band! They are fantastic! I have had the pleasure to see them several times at local venues in the Tampa Bay/Clearwater area and every time I have seen them play I have to get up and dance! Vikki has an amazing voice (and is gorgeous). Billy's vocals are awesome and plays the guitar like nobody's business! So if you are looking for a duo or trio that has a big sound, is great with the crowd, fun, exciting and really professional then I'd say Kaleidoscope Band is the perfect choice for you! R.L.

I hired DJ Crisolo for my wedding in 2014 and was very impressed by his professional attitude. Shortly after speaking to him he presented a track list of all songs for me to review. He was very well spoken on the mic and kept the guests well entertained. Above all, his equipment is excellent. Sound quality was crisp and clear and he didn't try to wing it. He put time and effort in preparation to entertain and my wife and I both appreciate that very much. Thanks CJ.

Tropigroove performed for my 40th wedding anniversary on May 28th, 2016. While we were eating, the band played lots of beautiful slows, kind of jazzy songs from their deep repertoire. After the speeches were over, the band took my guess back to the 70s playing some of the popular songs of that decade. The saxophonist leaves you with the sound to want to hear again, the young keyboard player plays with the crowd, he knows his craft. I recommend that you hire Tropigroove for your next occasion, whether you need the band for a cocktail or a dance party you'll get your money's worth. Jerry & Michelle

Wright Still is one of the most talented musicians that I have had the pleasure of working with. He is professional, dependable, courteous and loves what he does. I had the pleasure of working with Wright for several months while I was in Florida and I would not trade that experience for anything. I believe that any production would benefit greatly from Wright being a part of it.

Mike has played for us on a number of occasions and each time left us wanting more! He is so talented and so entertaining. Plus he is just a really warm and friendly person. We own a restaurant and he has played there, our wedding and numerous parties and events over the 20 years we have known him. He has a wide range of genres and always plays my favorite, classic rock! He is an asset to your business.

I had the opportunity to have The Flashbacks play at my holiday party and they were great! Rock and Roll from the 50s and 60s like I remember. The band members were knowledgeable about the songs, the back stories and created nostalgia from all my guests, both young and old. Every song was a toe-tapper.

With equal ease this jazz group can crank out hot and sassy numbers as well as smooth mellow vocals by the indomitable Katt Heffner. I've watched this group play concerts at the Ringling Museum bayfront and intimate clubs in Sarasota. They always seem to be able to surprise me.

Robert Plates is one of the finest guitarists I've heard. As I'm not a musician myself, I cannot knowledgeably address his expertise, but as a music lover, I most certainly can avouch for the listening pleasure that Rob brings when he is playing. His exuberance and obvious pleasure when he is performing is infectious and forces you to listen to his fine mastery of his instrument. In a large group, clearly his contribution to the total sound of the ensemble is significant. He has a talent which is heartfelt. I have used Rob for my private parties and have been following his music career. Don't miss any opportunity you have to hear Rob play whether it's solo, jamming or with a noted band.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
