FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a CPDT-KA certified dog trainer. CPDT is regulated through CCPDT.ORG. You can read more on my website about the stringent requirements to qualify to take the exam for certification and how continued education credits are required to retain certification. I am a member of APDT who put out resource manuals and news letters. ABC where I was certified provides a forum where trainers can ask each other questions.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I myself adopted an adult terrier. While in a group class he was attacked. After that event he began to exhibit fearful aggression towards other dogs. The trainers in the store failed to recognize how aggressive the attacking dog was or how to approach the whole situation. Through my own education and trial and error I worked with my own dog with gradual success. I learned how few people have real experience dealing with these behaviors. Then when I began my SPCA volunteer work for my ABC-DT, I got caught in the middle of a fatal dog fight between two shelter dogs. I realized their behaviorist had failed to identify the issues in this dog. It was at that moment that I realized that if I have a natural talent for interpreting dog body language and behavior I should use it to help others.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Besides the common case of a dog with aggression toward either people or other dogs, I find myself educating owners on how to manage hyperactivity in the dogs, jumping, barking and housebreaking.
