Jorge need to fix a few lightings and repair some existing issues with light. He was really fantastic and on time. First he thought about it and then he started to make a solid and clean job. He needed his time but I must also say the problem wasn't easy to solve and we needed new material. Also we had a beautiful dining table pendant which took a lot of time since we needed to assemble all the little pieces. I would recommend him to everybody. Our next appointment is already booked.

Very professional, he needed to come twice because of a piece for the repair. Even so, the pricing was very reasonable. Excellent communication, punctuality, and ethics. Will recommend without hesitation.

We needed three exterior three hurricane doors installed. The job was quoted online at $120 per door and we agreed upon $150 per door to include removal of the existing doors (total $450), which was very reasonable based on other quotes. Alexander was very professional and courteous and did a very nice job. However, we had to caulk some gaps between the door jam and exterior wall. Mellie (sp) in the office was also very nice and accommodating. The job ended up costing $640 ($190 over the quoted price). We called the door supplier who told us the $150 for extra wood and preparation was probably needed because sometimes the concrete door openings especially older homes are not perfectly shaped and the $40 to repair some damage to the walls is not included in the installation price. We would definitely recommend this company but suggest you clarify any potential extra costs to avoid any surprises.

They called me also immediately and we arranged a for them to come out the next day, Sunday. Well, they called me Sunday to say they were short on glass and wasn't sure if they had my size, so we rescheduled for Monday at 10:00 am. They were her t 9:30 and it took them all of 5 minutes to repair my window.

Ariel was responsive in getting in touch with me, he scheduled an appointment convenient to my schedule, called before he arrived, and was prompt. He also was driving an immaculate vehicle, which made me feel like he pays attention to details. When he diagnosed the problem with the toilet, he showed me exactly what needed to be done, and advised me that it was not as bad as he thought, the flange(?) didn't need to be replaced. There was also a leaky hose which he fixed, and gave me a discount on that portion of the repair as well. I will definitely call Ariel for any future plumbing issues.

Andre arrived with his crew on a late Sunday evening, and quickly fixed the plumbing issue. They were all very friendly and highly professional. Andre took his time to explain everything and even made several recommendations. I will definitely used them again for any small and/or major plumbing repairs. They are quick, professional, and reasonably priced. Most importantly, they did not charge extra for coming out on a Sunday evening.

Jason was very easy to work with on getting an estimate for my work. He was able to come out on a days notice and did a great job with multiple appliance and fan installations, an air return repair and fixed my badly aligned front doors. He even helped with a refrigerator and stove fit problem at no charge. I will be working with Jason again in the near future for other projects. A+

We had piping under our kitchen sink burst a few days before Thanksgiving. Maynor, the owner, replied to my inquiries very quickly and with a reasonable price. Even with it being a holiday week, he was able to come and repair the damage the next morning. He was very polite, professional, and I am very pleased with the quality of the work. I would recommend to anyone in the area and would hire again.

Very professional and reliable people ! They came out to repair our screen sliders and after discussing our options we decided to purchase new screen doors. They price difference wasn't that much more and they special ordered the screen doors and came in before scheduled. They installed the doors in no time and was very pleasant and insisted if we had any issues to give them a call.

Abel responded quickly and completed the job as secheduled and the repair was done and now the doors work perfectly. The only complaint was that he did not clean-up after he completed the work to the satisfaction of the tenent. When this was brought to his attention he did apologize. I would use him again, but would be explicit about the full scope of work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
