Jorge arrived on time, came well supplied, and spent an entire day here. He assembled some rather difficult Ikea storage cabinets, repaired a faulty electrical switch, hung a wooden blind, and repaired a broken closet sliding door wheel. Do not hesitate to call him - he is multi talented!

Mr. Raffaele Puleo did a great job for my place. He replaced my old toilet, connected my washer and dryer, installed some ceiling lights for me, and even went out of his way to patch up my jumpy laminate floor, in a timely manner. His rate is very reasonable and his work ethics are superior. He came with a ready attitude to work and he is very punctual. He is committed to solving my household problems and never complains while working in uncomfortable spaces. Mr. Puleo is very honest. He never uses gimmicks to try to make more money out of you and always looks for the fastest and most inexpensive solution for you. He understands, listens, and doesn't take advantage of my innocence about handyman and construction services. He will be my choice if I have needs with regard to my place in the future. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and family who seek handyman services.

Jamie is fantastic. Nice guy, went above and beyond to accommodate. My wall wasn’t conducive to wiring moving and he did everything to make it work. The price he quoted didn’t change even after extra cabling and wall plates he installed (as in, he didn’t charge me more) Would love to work with him again and refer any business I can his way.

Jose is a very professional and extremely hard worker. He's always very responsive and started working as soon as he got to the job on the first day! I needed some organization work done around the house. He was able to provide ideas to improve the use of the space. I will certainly hire him again for future jobs.

1000% CONTENT! I am so happy I found Pete and his team. Sincere, Genuine and honest. You can tell he is very knowledgeable and experienced. He is happy when you are happy and will not just do a job until you are. Includes you in the process to ensure you understand what is being done and welcomes your feedback and ideas as well. He removed a Master Bathroom I had from the 70s and installed a new one I had bought. The vanity itself was not big enough to fit in the space and I really needed someone who could also give me options in such a case. Well he did and built some great shelves which made the vanity a perfect fit. I am so happy with my new bathroom and have so many other upgrades I plan to do to my home. Great to know I no longer have to look for someone, as Pete is my new go to person for any home upgrades and repairs and will refer him to everyone I know. THANK YOU PETE!!!!

Awesome work! We had our old FPE circuit box replaced. Yamil was the first out to our home, explained all my options, was fair on price, came and got it done for us and even left the space clean. I would highly recommend, and plan to use him again for my future needs. Thanks

This was the first company I ever hired on thumbtack. I WAS VERY HESITANT ABOUT doing business this way but I had a great experience. GABRIEL was my point of contact for this job. (Paver installation). He showed up on a Sunday for a free quote. He came back a second time on a Sunday for a seperate quote when i made some changes to my original paver layout. I was so scared to give money to someone before a job had been started but I understood he needed half the money to buy materials. (I had a bad experience with another company in the past)...he communicated with me at all times letting me know when profduct was ordered, when it would arrive, etc, etc etc. The day of the job went very smoothly. He has a very nice group of employees that did the work. Easy to talk to and ask questions while they work. They finished 600 sq feet in one day:). And worked on the weekend bc we had very bad rain all week therefore the job had been delayed. I had one complaint about the pavers and immediately Gabriels team came back and graciously took care of it without making me feel horrible about it:)... In conclusion, i really enjoyed doing business with this company. In fact i have already called him at least 4 times with questions on other potential jobs for them. The only, thing id recommend is that when laying pavers, ask how close they will actually get to the fence when they are laid (IF YOU HAVE A FENCE). We have a 6 inch space between the fence and the pavers that I was not expecting to have. We ended up filling the space with landscaping stones. I am positive there was a good reason for this spacing, but Id ask either way ... Loved loved loved doing business with this team....A++++++++++,5********,💯💯💯💯💯 I will try to post pics later, or Gabriel has some Im sure:)

Jerry is awesome, a true professional. He was prompt, surveyed the work spaces and the cabinets that were to be installed. He assembled and install the kitchen cabinet first, incorporating modifications in the assembly, to make it sturdier. After the completing the kitchen cabinet assembly and installation, he installed two medicine cabinets in the bathroom. They were already assembled. During the work we practiced his English and my Spanish, it was a teaching and learning moment for both of us. I look forward to hiring Jerry and his company to perform additional projects at my home. Kudos to Jerry.

Bathroom Remodeled Made Easy. We were looking to upgrade our master bathroom. It was a kind of standard bath with the tub and shower in the same place. I wanted a bigger tub, and my wife wanted to have the shower separated from the tub. In the limited space we had, She rather have the shower even if there was no tub. After the demolition of the existing features, and when I was about to give up in the tub, Juan Carlos took the time to help us decide on the layout. He used plywood to represent the location of the walls and the tub. He also suggested us to use a sliding pocked door, which open up the space we needed to have both the tub and the shower. He did a fantastic job relocating the plumbing and putting everything together for the new shower with two jet body sprays and a handle. The level of detail he had while installing the marble tiles was impressive. He also did a very good carpentry job around the tub with trim and wainscoting. We are very happy with his work and all of the input we got from him while selecting materials and colors. I recommend him highly, and we will call him again when we are ready to remodel our kitchen.

JC responded quickly and completed work immediately. He patched a wall under a sink and sealed with silicone areas in bathroom such as side of vanity and top of mirror that bugs were crawling out of. His rate was reasonable.

Ronan built in an ikea pax unit for us giving it a great custom look just like what I wanted. He framed it in, built a custom side shelf to blend in with the cabinets and make the best use of the space. He also did some custom framing on the doors to match a picture I really liked. He cleaned up and was careful and respectful of our home. He was kind, positive, helpful, and easy to have in our home. He has good ideas and listens to what I wanted. I've worked with quite a few contractors and handymen over the last several years and frankly usually dread it. Ronan was easy to work with from beginning to end.

If I can give Lourdes more than 5 stars I would!!!! She came the day before to see what exactly she needed to clean in my apartment and what she needed to bring, the following day she came and exceeded all my expectations! For me, two kids makes it almost impossible to get any work around the house, especially them being sick all the time bc of daycare, but she got right into it. (I have a 2 bedrooms/ 2 bathroom apartment) Lourdes moved all my furniture to clean, wiped all the tables, cleaned my sliding doors (2:master & living room), even the door from outside. She has been a blessing and real big help. My apartment had been organized ... Somewhat anyways, but very dirty! She has literally made apartment spotless. I recommend her to everyone! I will be using her again in 2 weeks, every every other week after that!!!! Great job Lourdes & thank you for everything!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
