Lou is an amazing handyman. He is very professional, he came in and assessed the project and provided me with a quote, even though he encountered a lot of issues due to the previous contractors work he still maintained his original assessment and completed the project with professionalism. I will be contacting him again for my future projects for sure and i would advise the next client to do the same.

I am extremely happy for choosing Olive Cleaning to perform the deep cleaning of my parents' house. The team arrived on time, which immediately scored them points, and they went straight to work. The leader was friendly and professional, both towards me and towards his team. The team consisted of three members, including the leader, and they all worked efficiently and effectively. This was a difficult, dirty and smelly job as the house was in very bad shape, but the team did a fantastic job! They did everything I expected from them, and more. I would readily recommend Olive Cleaning for any cleaning work that you may need done.

Sylvester just finished our popcorn removal and painting of our entire house and of remodeling of our bathroom counters and cabinets, I am so happy with the results, I felt compelled to write a review. A lot of times, people only write reviews for bad service or work that was poorly done, so I thought I'd take the time to recognize some excellent work. I was beyond impressed with Sylvester. After we had a lot of trouble with another contractor doing our kitchen counters and cabinets, we knew we had to find someone different for our bathrooms and other things we needed done. We had at least 4 different contractors come over to check out the job and give us quotes. Sylvester actually came in at the best price. On top of that, he really worked with us to get it within our budget. With a baby on the way and limited funds, his flexibility was MUCH appreciated. Not one of the other contractors was willing to work with us in that way. I would definitely hire Sylvester again, He was such a pleasure to work with. He's just a great guy all around and his work was way better than we could have hoped for. I'd say we got more than expected for the money we paid.

Southern Home Services has performed a variety of different jobs for me. Marty and his crew definitely exceeded what i expected. He also showed me different ways to help me save money, which doesn't happen to often. These guys are the only ones I truly trust after trying many different contractors. I am so comfortable with them that I go to the store while they work on my home. Its not often you run into people like that. Try them you won't be disappointed.

Originally I had contacted Anthony for a door installation but when I spoke with him, I learned of his many talents and hired him for drywall repair and installation of floor tile. I had a condo damaged from Hurricane Matthew and Anthony did all repairs needed and did an amazing job. My tile is 12x24, not easy to lay and I also have tile base to be installed to match the grout lines. He truly performed in a very professional manner. I would hire him without hesitation!!!

From the moment we met Bill, we felt we could trust him and his crew. They were very professional, reliable and did the 2 bathroom remodels with excellence!! We love our bathrooms and really couldn't imagine going with a different company. We will refer Prep Plus to anyone who needs reliable, quality work. And, his pricing was quite fair. We couldn't believe what some contractors were thinking they could charge us. We were. Sry happy with Prep Plus and will be using them soon again for our kitchen back splash. Highly recommended!!!

Had one contractor bail on us last minute. Jorge returned our request for help within minutes of my wife searching for a replacement. He was at our place the next morning with crew and they delivered. He was even able to install our new door that was actually the wrong size for the original framing. They took their time and it showed. We couldn't be happier.

We were trying to manage a condo kitchen remodel in Florida from Kentucky. Our first contractor totally messed up. We found Tom on Thumbtack and with a leap of faith hired him sight unseen. I wish we would have found him in the first place. The work was fantastic. He put in cabinets, back splash, painted, and some other 'handy-man things'. He went above and beyond with suggestions and attention to detail. We have found a most valuable asset, a contractor we can trust.

Words can not begin to describe this company... I had the worst time finding a contractor to help remodel my shower; from quotes that were way too much or to ones that I’d hire but never would show up to collect the deposit. JAW was on time for his initial consult and understood what I was looking for. Gave me an estimate within a few days and decided to hire him and put me on the schedule. He and his crew were on time everyday they worked and cleaned up when finished so you never knew work was being done by the end of the day. Communication was always there to let me know what was going on at all times. Could not be more happier that I went with his company. I will be referring him to anyone that needs a reliable contractor and will be my go to for the rest of my home renovations

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
