Contractor removed a 30 foot long by 8 feet tall masonry wall with footings. The work was primarily demolition but included surface restoration. The contractor performed the work on time, for a reasonable price. I was very pleased and would certainly use the contractor again

Denis has done a lot of repairs in our newly acquired house, in need of a lot of work. For four weeks (including week-ends most of the time), Denis has demonstrated an exceptional sense of professionalism and dedication. Not only his work quality was above and beyond anything usually considered as great, but he also made a number of suggestions and proposals which turned out to make the house even nicer than in our own plans. Even other contractors (electrician, plumber, etc.) spontaneously shared their appreciation of Denis' work and spirit, a not so common occurrence in a fiercely competitive construction business. We do recommend Denis to anyone in need of top notch quality repair work, combined with a unique bright and pleasant personality.

Mr. Okray took his time to measure the property and explain how the process would go. He also answered all my questions and concerns in a knowledgeable way. He was very patient and optimistic and gave me money saving tips that no other contractor would do. Thanks Rick, my husband and I are truly thankful and we look forward to working with you soon.

I highly recommend Leo and his wife Nery! They are punctual, professional, and take great pride in their work. I received a quote for installing and painting interior doors the same day I reached out. Since I don't live in Miami, Leo kept me informed via phone and sent me pictures of the progress on a daily basis. Leo and Nery worked very fast and did an excellent job. Leo customized some doors to make them fit in uneven and non-standard openings. They even swept all the dirt that the previous contractors left behind. We are very impressed with the quality of work and their professionalism from beginning to end. We will definitely hire them again for future needs.

I called a previously employed contractors named Milan and Son who did a terrible job and destroyed my carpet and bathroom. I had to kick them out of my house. Stay away from Andre and Felix and Antonio. They completely ruined the work. I almost gave up on Thumbtack but I decided to give Thumbtack another chance. So I contacted Rick Ricketts Home Remodeling Repairs. And he came over that same night and took a look at the shoddy work Milan and Son did. Rick said he can correct all the problems and he did a fantastic job. Professional and clean. And he did it for a reasonable price even though there was a lot more work to do. So definitely I would hire Rick again.

Ronan built in an ikea pax unit for us giving it a great custom look just like what I wanted. He framed it in, built a custom side shelf to blend in with the cabinets and make the best use of the space. He also did some custom framing on the doors to match a picture I really liked. He cleaned up and was careful and respectful of our home. He was kind, positive, helpful, and easy to have in our home. He has good ideas and listens to what I wanted. I've worked with quite a few contractors and handymen over the last several years and frankly usually dread it. Ronan was easy to work with from beginning to end.

It's been a pleasure working with Paul. Finally a contractor that can do the job, while going above and beyond for his clients. His right hand Bonnie is always very helpful and manages projects from their office in Lake Worth. Will work with 'Paul Bennett Builders' again in the future.

Nigel is courteous, prompt, and does good work. We had him install regular windows and remove crank windows in our bedroom. We intend to hire him for other projects down the road. Don't hesitate to contact Nigel for your home repairs. After dealing with other contractors who never kept appointments or fell off the face of the earth, or price gauged, it was refreshing to find a good person to work with.

Skip did a series of tiny-to-small projects around the house. He replaced our front porch stairs, hung a porch swing, raised a threshold, installed a couple ceilings, lowered a peninsula cabinet, replaced an exterior door, installed a glass shower enclosure, etc. He did everything fabulously. He took on the subcontracting of some other work, too, and acted as the general contractor. His standard of quality was the same as ours. We are thrilled with everything he did. He was prompt and industrious in getting the work done. We would definitely use him again and have recommended him to others for similar work.

We performed a major interior renovation - full kitchen, bath, floors, laundry room, front door - to our home in Miami over a 6-month time frame. The company's work was exceptional. Ariel worked closely with us throughout the outset of the project. He brought new ideas that really helped us realize our vision. His crew (in particular Neri) showed up every day, on time, and completed the job in a timely manner. They were very accommodating despite a few surprises in electrical and plumbing, working overtime to meet the project timelines. We're so happy with our home and there's not one thing we would change. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ariel and crew without hesitation for a renovation or new home build.

Sphinx construction company came by my house to do a roofing job and did an amazing job. They fixed the valley of my roof, detected the leak, added the roof membrane and laid down the tiles. They are very reliable, easy to work with, easy get in contact with, and they did everything in the time frame they said the job would be done in. I'd definitely recommend them. Thank you Sphinx!

Home Services Plus (Mark Pennington) was the 6th person I contacted for facia and soffit repair on our house. We are extremely happy we waited. Mark quoted a price and time frame to do the job which he adhered to. Always came when he said he would. That's a plus but we are more than happy with the job he did. He addressed all our concerns and explained what he was doing and why as he was working. He also explained what caused our problem and made sure to correct the original builders mistakes. As I was watching I saw him do things that the original builder did not which over time caused us a big problem. We would highly recommend Mark for any home improvements or repairs as he is versed in all. We will be using Mark again and would recommend him to everyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
