Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Fantastic experience working with the team at S & K. We are so happy with the work but even more with the experience. Excellent communication from consultation through install, we are happy to know we have our go-to electricians from here on out. They installed four recessed lights to match our existing lights and also installed two pendant lights in the kitchen.

I had a long punch list of electrical projects and Izaias did a great job on the work. We needed outlets, switches, ceiling fans and he even crawled in the attic to check a few connections. Before the project even started he was very responsive and was great about letting me know timing and schedule. I have found a reliable go to electrician!

Jenray is my new go to electrician if he’ll have me!! He showed up early, had all the right tools, took his time to complete the job and cleaned up after himself. He was extremely respectful of me and my home. I wish I had more projects right now for him. He installed 2 pendant lights in my kitchen and put them on a dimmer switch for me. Thank you Jenray!!

Mr. Sharif was very responsive and helpful is letting us know what our project entailed and what was needed. During the service Mr. Sharif and his co-worker were very respectful and work around some of our challenges with the project. He was very knowledge and even went out of his way to correct another issue he saw while performing service. If I have a problem in the future or any future additions, he'll definitely be my go-to electrician!

**installed a new breaker, in my main panel, with new power lines being ran for a new pool heater I had installed** Any review I leave wouldn’t seem worthy of the excellent service I received. 5 stars isn’t adequate for this team, nor is the 3 ‘qualities’ that Thumbtack allows. He exceeded all ‘qualities’ and/or what you’d hope to receive from any hired expert. His response to my initial inquiry was prompt. Then, he came over the same day and confirmed pricing - we immediately scheduled the job to the specific date/time I had the pool guys here. On the day of the job, he showed up on time, worked seamlessly with the other crew I had doing the non-electrical portion. Louis (Alvarez) and Nelson we’re both so incredibly personable, (and the other crew mentioned they loved them, too) polite, patient and knowledgeable in their craft. From the moment Alvarez (Louis) showed up, he re-explained everything and already thought up a “better” way to handle the job. He takes great pride in his workmanship and will not settle for less than perfect. His attention to detail made me feel extremely comfortable about anything he was tasked with - so much so......that I already hired him for a 2nd job - AND - my neighbor did, too! It’s amazing when you find someone who loves what they do and they are happy to share their talent at a fair price. With that mindset, the customer always wins! (Yet, it’s a win-win because I’ll never use another electrician) Although true Integrity may be hard to come by with some, his is so deep rooted and I can’t imagine how different this review could be if I hired someone else. I hit the jackpot!! You two are a blessing to anyone fortunate enough to have you work for them.
