Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have an outlet installed?

If you plan on hiring a professional electrician to install an outlet, expect to pay $75 to $500, or an average of $210. But for an accurate cost estimate, you need to contact a few electrical outlet installers near you.

The light switch and outlet types may impact your cost. The location of the outlet also matters, as the electrician may have to route additional wiring and may not have access to existing wiring. If you need the outlet childproofed, this may also cost more.

Do I need a permit to install GFCI outlets?

Depending on where you live, you likely need a permit to install GFCI outlets. When in doubt, get in contact with your local government, and ask a licensed electrician to perform your electrical work.

Do I need an electrician to add an outlet?

Generally, this is a job best left to a licensed professional. A licensed electrician will be able to install your outlet using the most up-to-date code practices. If you need any permits to perform the install, the electrician should also be able to obtain them for you.

Nomar's work ethic was perfect. I own a restaurant and was able to get new outlets installed. I had a freezer that needed the cord rewired and outlet fixed! His price was better than the competition. If you need electric work I would recommend him!

Myghty Force Electrical has provided exceptional service on both occasions I’ve needed electrical work done. Max previously came out to troubleshoot a doorbell issue and was able to identify a bad transformer and replace it quickly. Most recently, Max installed two new outlets for my outdoor kitchen. What’s great about Myghty Force Electrical is that they come prepared with all the necessary material to complete your project. No time is wasted and the work gets done right the first time.

Anthony has been a pleasure to work with - I initially hired him to install electrical outlets but given his diverse skills I was able to have him help take care of other issues around the house including re-caulking, concrete repair, irrigation evaluation, and coax install. Anthony is responsive, professional, and his prices were very reasonable - I look forward to continuing to work with him for any various needs I might have for my new home.

I feel taken advantage of by Gordon. He charged me $550 for a couple of hours labor. I was hopeful due to his many positive reviews and he claims to be a licensed electrician. Gordon agreed to convert a kitchen outlet to GFI. After he left, I noticed it was installed crooked (not major). Then I noticed that one of the outlets he moved did not have the receptacle installed. I went into my attic to inspect the junction box Gordon installed. This clearly violates 3 parts of FL Electrical Code NFPA 70A. There are too many connections in the small box. The box is not covered and in insulation. The box is not mounted. I’m not an electrician but I am an engineer with over 30 years of experience. I am thankful that contrary to Gordon’s expectation that I inspected the work and avoided a house fire. Buyer beware!!

Juliano worked very hard from 9-4pm pretty much without stopping as far as I could tell. I would strongly recommend him for drywall repair, fixing gutters, or small repairs. However, he installed low voltage boxes (only safe with something like ethernet cable) for outlets, which is not just a code violation, it's a serious electrical fire hazard. Additionally, the lines he laid directly behind the drywall needed electrical conduit (pipe) to protect against someone driving a nail through them, but he did not house the romex (wires coated in plastic) in anything. Before he came out, I asked him through thumbtack if he could advise on permitting. His one word reply was "Yes." When I asked him before he left, he said, "No permit." A friend of mine with an electrical engineering degree suggested that he must have meant, 'You can't get a permit with the work I just did.' I believe Juliano is still learning English, and he simply is unaware of many of the safety codes governing electrical wiring. I was disappointed when I shared the above facts with him and asked him to issue a new invoice with the price lowered to reflect the work that will now need to be redone, and he lowered the price from $480 to $430. In summary, Juliano is an extremely hard worker, but if your project requires electrical work or anything that could involve a home inspection for insurance purposes, I would not recommend JVA Solution Service.
