Advice to self— Get a quote on everything before proceeding with work. Shop around and get price comparisons & let HVAC vendors know that I will seek competitor quotes. Select insured, bonded, BBB A+ rated companies. My experience — Mike is enthusiastic, personable, helpful & it was easy to work with him. I had initially planned to give a good review but the next day, we did a bit of research bc he left some things undone and to our surprise we felt we were price gouged, but I’ll lay it out and you can decide. Our HVAC system is about 5 years old. Positives -Mike found our HVAC unit in attic was freezing / thawing so he vacuumed the water pan, and noted this likely caused water leaks in ceiling. To remedy, he suggested we consider changing our air filters to the non-pleated (lower MERV) to reduce strain on hvac system air flow. When we had follow-up question: where to purchase these filters, since they’re not found at the big box stores, he was responsive and sent pictures late same day. -He replaced a capacitor that was close to breaking point but pointed out it still worked so we could choose to keep or replace. We chose to replace. -He voluntarily opened up 3 ceiling vents to improve airflow in kitchen and spent 10 minutes or so in hot attic trying to fix one kitchen vent that had no flow. Unfortunately that vent is still in need of more work but he had ideas for future visit if we wanted to do more. -Mike was very good at communicating some things. He sent a picture of some specials he would provide for his tuneup so I was clear on the cost of the cleaning/tuneup. He did not send anything on the on the refrigerant cost though. Note photo attached where second / third tune up specials include 2 lbs of refrigerant. We didn’t get those specials or proration from those specials. See pic below. That brings me to: The reason for low review: 1- Refrigerant (r420a) was installed before we had been quoted per pound cost or were aware it would be required. Found that local competitors in our area are charging $50 per pound (one $30, one $80 but all were under $100). Mike charges $160 per pound. 2- We required refrigerant last year so we and Mike suspected there was a leak. Mike didn’t fix the leak and suggested he could remedy the leak on his next visit. General industry advise seems consistent: it should be repaired right away. We did ask why it wasn’t fixed, esp since refrigerant is so costly? Mike indicates it was because he didn’t bring his die kit. 3- Total bill $737 = Tune up $99 special + new capacitor $158 + 3lbs (410a) refrigerant at $480. Yet our problems were still not fully fixed. We did give frank feedback on dissatisfaction and Mike indicated, “cost of my materials are insane”. He asked for lower priced competitor names, we gave him one and suggested others. Keep in mind, wholesale prices are found on internet - though one must be licensed to purchase. Home Depot, eBay, and so forth list prices of refrigerant and capacitors, etc. And of course there must be some margin markup from wholesale for the HVAC expertise - we do appreciate that this is totally necessary and fair. Mike indicated he wanted to make us “as happy as possible” and he offered to do the leak search and the cleaning free. It addressed the leak yet we felt it didn’t address the refrigerant overcharge and we lost confidence in his approach, so declined his offer. We’re going another route - as mentioned in opening paragraph.
