Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to clean a window?

The average cost to clean windows is between $165 to $180. Some companies might charge a flat rate per window, while others have a more adaptive pricing model. The number of window panes usually plays into the price, as individual panes take more time and materials to clean. The type of window (double-hung, casement, etc.) might also affect pricing. Do you tip a window washer?

Whether you tip a window washer is up to you, but you can certainly give them a tip if they do a good job. This is a particularly nice gesture for workers who clean your windows under harsh conditions (e.g. hot weather). A tip between $5 and $20 is appreciated. If it’s a crew, you can throw in $5 or more per person, or just go with $20 if it’s a single person. Qualities of a job well done include timeliness, professionalism and friendliness.

How do professionals clean windows?

Professionals use a basic solution of cleaning concentrate and water to get windows clean. They might use a scrubber to loosen grime and sun-baked debris off the glass, then begin working with a squeegee to make the glass perfectly clear. They will clean both inside and outside of the window. Professionals take extra care with individual divided panes to protect the edges.

How do I prepare for window cleaning?

You can do some light cleaning yourself. For example, you can wipe your window blinds. Also, clear the area inside and outside of belongings that could get in the cleaner’s way. Perform an inspection of your shutters and window screens to see whether you’d like them cleaned as well.

What is included in window cleaning?

Typically, professional window cleaners will clean both the inside and outside of your windows, taking care to use different techniques as needed for different types of windows. They can remove hard water stains and perform deep cleans after new construction.

Window cleaners may charge extra to remove, install, and clean screens and storm windows. They may also charge more to clean windows that are high off the ground. They will also usually clean window tracks, and can alert you if there’s a problem with your windows or trim.

How much is commercial window cleaning?

The national average cost to clean windows is $120-$170. Typically, window washing for commercial spaces costs less per window than residential window washing, but has a higher overall price because the greater number of windows. Commercial window cleaning companies may charge a standard rate per window — for example, $3 to clean the exterior only, with a higher rate of $4 or $5 to also clean the interior. There may be an additional charge, such as an extra $1 per window, for scrubbing off water stains or deep-cleaning window tracks. Double-hung windows require more labor and will therefore cost more to clean. Companies may charge a flat rate, such as $8 per double-hung window or $9 per French door, to account for the added work. Building height will play a factor in window washing costs. Standard cleaning for one- and two-story buildings will typically stay within the same range, but cleaning high-rise windows may entail special safety permits and equipment, which would increase costs. Your location will also affect window washing costs. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost to do business will have lower window cleaning rates than large cities.

I visited Thumbtack to search for a window cleaning service. Within minutes I received correspondence from three companies interested in quoting our window cleaning project. I feel that was great service receiving three responses so prompt. After review of the companies quote/remarks I contacted Ashley's Cleaning to discuss their quote of $100.00. During our conversation I mentioned we had a glass shower enclosure which need cleaning because of water staining on the glass. I was told no problem sir, we just cleaned a shower enclosure this week and the customer is very happy. I then suggested I send pictures of the shower enclosure along with additional pictures of what I considered to be larger than normal windows. I sent pictures of a triple sliding patio door, a triple nine foot living window and our front door which has a large leaded glass insert and two matching side lights. When Ashley reviewed the photos the she revised her initial quote from; $100.00 to $150.00. I felt the number to be fair, accepted Ashley’s quote, and was advised by Ashley three workers would be assigned to the job. I said great and scheduled service for Saturday, September 17, 2016. Just as promised at 9:00AM a worker arrived. The worker was a very once gentleman named Jay and advised he was Ashley’s husband. I then asked where the other crew members were and Jay advised he was the only worker today to handle the job. I mentioned I was told three workers would be assigned to the job and Jay advised, no, there were only two including him. He further explained the other worker didn’t show up for work, therefore he would handle the job himself. I was concerned about only one worker because of the amount of work and was initially told there would be three workers. Jay said not to worry he could handle the job alone. After a quick walk through the job Jay asked If I had a ladder he could use because he need one and didn’t have one. This was surprising a window cleaner arriving without proper equipment to perform the job especially after we sent pictures of the window he need the ladder to clean that window. I grabbed a ladder for Jay; a Little Giant and showed him how to open and stage it for what he had to do. I then explained to Jay I was going to leave for about an hour to care for some business and upon my return if he were ready he could to access the interior of our home to clean the shower and interior side of the windows. Approximately forty-five minutes passed and I returned home to find working on the front large window. Jay advised he was finished all her windows so I toured the job to evaluate his work. Upon doing so I was disappointed to a high degree. Smudges and streaking on the upper half of windows and the bottom windows were not cleaned, Jay never removed the screens. Two windows had a few paint speckles from over spray of a paint job. I questioned Jay about why he didn’t clean the paint over spray and was told, I don’t have a razor blade, or scraper to clean the windows, if you have one I will clean them. I furnished Jay a razor scraper to complete the job on those two windows. I then removed the screens and asked Jay to clean the windows where I removed the screens, he attempted but the result was poor. At this point Jay moved to the interior of the home to clean windows and the shower. He began with the shower, after about thirty minutes of working on the shower he advised the shower was finished. I ask if it would be ok for me to take a look it he and was told not a problem. I went in and couldn’t tell anything had been done. I raised concern and Jay said that is the best he can do. I then asked Jay to watch as I grabbed a razor, cleaning solution and began working on the shower door myself. Within minutes the door was crystal clear, Jay was speechless. He started working again on the shower, it was then Jay shared he’s not a window cleaner, he cleans homes not windows and he didn’t have the equipment, or supplies to do the job. At that point I suggested I pay Jay half of the quote ($75.00) for the work done at that time and return Monday with an equipped crew to complete the job and collect the remainder owed. Jay said no, I will handle it. I said ok and moved to my home office. A short time later Jay came to me and asked if I had a roll of paper towels he could have to wipe the windows, I said yes and supplied him with the paper towels. Shortly thereafter Jay returned and asked how much did they quote for the job? I responded $150.00, at that point Jay said would you pay me $100.00 and I will have my wife call you later today to schedule back the fellows that clean windows sometime Monday? I agreed, paid the $100.00 and Jay departed. He did not put up the borrowed ladder, left my hoses he used in a mess and all the window screens on the ground in the rear yard. Later that day as promised I received a call from Ashley to discuss rescheduling a team from her company returning Monday September 19, 2016 to complete the job. The conversation was civil but could have easily gotten out of hand, but that’s not me. Ashley made statements one being I mislead her about the job since they they don’t clean paint overspray from windows. I reminded Ashley I offered to send additional pictures at the time she was making her quote and she declined my offer of additional pictures. I also said window cleaning involves removing what’s dirtying the windows; be it a bug, bird droppings etc. the paint overspray per her husband was only on two windows and very fine. Ashley agreed to send two workers out Monday at 11:00AM. Well, today Monday September 19, 2016 I received a call from Ashley advising they clean homes etc. and began to state her position to cover her company's inefficacies etc. I wanted no part of the conversation she was serving and told her to forget about coming out I would secure a window cleaning company to complete the job. When it comes to window cleaning based on my experience I would never consider Ashley’s. I would not be surprised if Ashley post a comment with rhetoric attempting to discredit my post and experience with her company. If she does so be it, I passed along my experience with Ashley relative to window cleaning and nothing more. At this point it’s up to potential consumers to decide if Ashley’s is a window cleaning service they will trust and hire.

It was all great. John was running late, but called to let me know and then showed up when he said he would! Windows super clean. I think I misunderstood from talking to other companies and that it included window sills and screens . I would rehire John though. Very friendly and professional

Francis came out right away and gave me a detailed and fair estimate. He was flexible on his dates when we diecided to pressure clean first. It was a lot of work on his part (I’m embarrassed to say we have never cleaned the windows and we’ve been here 20 years!) The results are stunning! We are so happy and certainly will make this a part of our spring cleaning! I highly recommend Cleanview 👍
