Chris helped me when the physical therapists couldn't. A chronic low back issue had nagged me for many years and engaging in weekly work with Chris in private sessions, the problem was remedied. His knowledge comes from his own personal experience and the 25+ years he has been teaching and coaching. I highly recommend Chris as a coach and instructor. I have two curves in my back, both greater than 40°, and although I was active in swimming and triathlons, my lower back pain was becoming more and more difficult to manage. In 2016, at the recommendation of my back doctor and a few friends, I sought out St. Petersburg Yoga, and Chris Acosta’s help specifically, to relieve my pain. I had several private sessions with Chris, whose scoliosis is more severe than mine, and who, over a lifetime of experience has learned to address pain and the consequences of the curvatures. After having me go through a series of stretches, he was able to show me which sides had less mobility and required longer hold times. He taught me how to recognize the imbalances in my body, not just by visual cues, but by understanding ‘edge.’ I used the swing to help decompress my spine and the shoulder stand for my neck. After just a few sessions, I remember the first time in years when I was able to turn my head to the left to look behind me. I didn’t have to turn my whole torso, and I didn’t feel any pain. What an amazing feeling - I never knew how much I could miss such a simple movement! With his extensive yoga knowledge and experience with scoliosis, Chris helped me ease my pain and gave me the freedom to engage in more activities than I had been able to in years!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

    One-hour coaching session: $70 Ten sessions: $650 ($50 savings!) I offer a free 15-minute consultation to all potential clients to discuss your needs, describe my approach, and answer any initial questions you might have. Each client is different - some clients meet with me twice per week, others once per week, others potentially once per month. I work collaboratively with my clients on creating a coaching plan that is manageable, but still keeps you on track with your intentions and goals.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

    Because there is no one-size fits-all formula for wellness, the first step is identifying what needs attention in your life right now - back pain; recovering from an injury; chronic stress or anxiety; facing a big change like retirement, childbirth or divorce; or trying to get better sleep are just some examples. I call these the loudest noises. We want to launch our work together focusing on the big stuff first. As daunting as that might seem, it’s in the core stuff where we have the biggest potential for change. And usually, as we start to dismantle the louder noises, we start to see some organic movement in the lower-grade issues as well. Once we’re clear on our starting points, then we can start working on the most beneficial and potent therapeutic practices for you. Depending on your particular needs and circumstances, this might include a combination of physical practices, mindfulness exercises, guided meditation, breathing techniques, mantra training, partnered self-inquiry, daily tools to help create new brain pathways, and others.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

    I am an E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance registered instructor.
