My work combines traditional design with modern elements, such as a parsons-style coffee table or side tables. Another way to add a modern perspective is with art. But, excellent, refined taste & suitability are the basis for all my work. The ability to work independently with clients on defining their taste so that they are happy with the result. My work with clients turns into long-term relationships in which I do additional work for them as needed.

Richard Hershner decorated several rooms in our New York City apartment. He has a refined and classic design style with an extensive knowledge of antiques. Richard was a pleasure to work with and was very good about coming in on budget.

I could not give Richard Hershner a higher rating! I have worked with him for 15 years. During that time, he decorated our 18th century Connecticut house, including designing and decorating a poolhouse which has been published, and designing and installing extensive gardens on the property. A history major from a top University, he brought his extensive knowledge, creativity and practicality to design this sublime and functional retreat for our busy family. We were so happy with the result, we had him decorate our NYC apartment with a mix of modern and antique furniture for a totally different look and we could not have been happier with the result. This was done 15 years ago and we just had him refresh the apartment, again, with a spectacular outcome. Richard is a lovely person to work with, very detail oriented with an abundance of common sense including an understanding of how a space can best serve the people that live in it. We are also very appreciative of how respectful he is about the cost of the projects making very wise decisions on where to spend money and where to save.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge for the initial consultation $250 and a retainer based on the complexity of the project. This covers all the upfront thinking and planning that goes into a project and shows that the client is committed to working with the designer.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I prefer to meet a potential client in their current home as a basis for our discussion of how they want to make changes or to discuss a new home.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
To improve my skills I am always trying to see new things--art, architecture, interiors, decorative arts and to look closely and see what I most like about it & also what I can learn from it.
