Joseph was awesome! He came to the property and examined the our two oak trees; he was honest with us to say our trees did not need trimming/pruning. He is the one to say if a job really needs to be done or not. I appreciated his honesty and him time. He is a great arborist with integrity!

Joe and his crew did a fantastic job trimming a very large Laurel Oak in the back yard. Joe came out the same day we made the request on Thumbtack and gave us a great estimate on the spot. Everything was covered under one price. They paid great attention to detail and went to great lengths to make sure the job was done perfectly. They also made sure to clean up and left everything as they found it. Thanks again Joe.

Made an appointment to get the job done (hedge trimmed). Kathy and her associate showed up to do it but he was physically unable to do it, having just come from a Dr's office where they put in an IV. Reset the appointment for the following week. They showed up on time, did a good job and even some extra trimming of other plants around the house

Larry came out and gave me a quote for the services I had requested and also let me know about a tree that was actually dead in my front yard. He gave us an excellent price and we are very grateful that he noticed the dead tree since it very likely could have caused serious damage to our home if we had not had it removed. Larry and his team did an excellent job trimming our trees and removing the large dead oak from our property. They were thorough and very professional. The crew did a great job cleaning up all the debris and leaving our property looking great. We will definitely be using them again in the future.

Trimmed tall, overgrown hedges. Not a large job, but I was given a fair price with a firm completion date/time - firm schedule was important to me. Job completed and cuttings taken away, perfect. I got estimates for several other things I need done.

We have a fairly large front, side and back yard. Michael came out to my house to give me a quote. His monthly price was very reasonable and included an initial clean up of the yard (stick/leaf clearing, trimming hedges, edging, etc). After the consult, I scheduled my first service the following week. I was very impressed with the job Michael did and the care and precision he used. He spent a good 3 (or more) hours here and our lawn(s) look awesome! Highly recommend.

Paul and his team provided excellent service, trimming one large living oak, including the removal of a massive runner. They also trimmed up four palms in the same area. Price was comparable to other estimates, but the customer service from Paul was what hooked us. Day of work, we received multiple pictures as the work progressed. Will hire again.

Ken was prompt and professional. Our stumps were pushing against our fences so there was some extra cutting of the trees which had to be done before the stumps could be ground. He had all the right equipment and completed the job exactly how we had requested. Will recommend him to all!

It was a real pleasure meeting Luis and his team. Luis is "old school" and, if he tells you something, he stands by it. I knew right off that he had a lot of integrity because he called me to let me know that he was running a little late but was on his way. He believes, as I do, that when you tell someone you'll be there at a given time, you should make every effort to fulfill that promise. Unfortunately, not all businesses operate like that anymore. They worked hard to complete my tree trimming and "big bird" removal. Before leaving, they cleaned (blew, raked, etc.) all areas. I am very satified with their services and highly recommend them. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
