Chad, was distinctly professional, clearly knowledgeable, and, most important to me, HONEST!! In my personal experience within this industry, I can attest that this is a rarity. I prefer to do business with people who have integrity, so finding a sincere person in Chad was very refreshing. Additionally, I place great value on training and experience, and it's evident so does OEL. For all of these reasons, HIGHLY RECOMMEND OEL -- I'll certainly be using them for all of my future HVAC needs.

Wow!!!!! Mr. Timmons provided a time window to review the issue. He arrived within the window and provided a phone alert prior to arrival. Mr Timmons assessed the issue, provided a cost and repaired the issue promptly. I found Mr. Timmons to be knowledgeable in his craft, additionally the cost was fair. This is a contractor with integrity. This was a great experience. Thank you Mr Timmons and Thumbtack.

Wow!!! Let me start by saying Alex is absolutely amazing to work with. I am a landlord with a Condo in the Clearwater area, and have had issues with my AC unit every year. My tenants are moving out so I have decided to contact Alex to have him check on the AC unit, because my tenants mentioned that there was a little leak that was damaging the ceiling. Alex was extremely responsive, punctual, and very accommodating to my tenants schedules. He went out to the property and fixed the leak rather quickly. He also inspected the unit and did some diagnostics to make sure nothing else was wrong. He contacted me the very next day letting me know that he was able to fix the leak, and that everything else looked great. I asked Alex what I owed him for the work, and he said "Nothing"... Confused that I misheard him, I repeated myself and he again said "Nothing". He said that it was a very quick and easy fix and that he wouldn't feel right charging me for it...!!!! Wow!!! I have Never, and I mean NEVER, had an HVAC person not charge me for doing "a little work", no matter how small the fix. Needless to say I told Alex that I would like to have him as my go to AC guy for the future, and of course he was very humble and thanked me for contacting him. I've been through a number of different HVAC companies, and this is my first great experience. It is nice to finally feel like I have found someone who is willing to help and be absolutely honest with me, instead of charging me an arm and a leg for a fix that didn't work. Save yourself the trouble and hire Alex to take care of your HVAC issues.

If you want a knowledgeable, honest, caring, and hard-working HVAC specialist and crew to install and service your system, then you don't have to look any further. Steve Taranto is the absolute best and we were lucky to find him. He knows all the (lousy?) equipment out there, and recommended the equipment that he believed would satisfy our needs with the best combination of serviceability, fewest problems, and lower cost. We had to finally replace our 14 year old #$*&$$... expensive Carrier system in 95 degree heat when the 9th Bristol compressor in 14 years broke and could no longer be replaced. Our original company, Climatic Conditioning, did nothing to help us out. Steve Taranto took the time to try to get the broken Bristol compressor going so we would have some cooling while we waited for our new system. Steve gave us a very reasonable price for our new Goodman system, which has Copeland, rather than Bristol compressors, has more metal than plastic, and is made in USA. Steve and his crew worked so hard (and late into the evening) to get our new system installed and cooling within 2 days. Other company estimates we had obtained were much higher in price for the same system, and could not be installed for a week, or they proposed more expensive, Carrier or Trane systems with known compressor issues. During this process I also learned from all the proposals we received, and from Steve, how important it is for the service people to know what they are doing, and to clean their equipment after each usage, so as not to contaminate one system with oil or other remnants from another broken system, and to not overload a compressor with freon (as a previous Climatic Conditioning tech may have done to our broken compressor). When you select a large company (such as our previous use of Climatic Conditioning), you get many different service techs maintaining your system over the years, and you don't know their skills and whether they followed proper procedures. Since we had 9 broken compressors in 14 years, I suspect poor installation and maintenance could have contributed to that. We trust Steve Taranto, and we most highly recommend him.

Super star customer service, but price was a little high. Nonetheless, our HVAC work was fixed to our satisfaction and followed up to ensure the work completed was still meeting our expectations.

Alumni Air called me within 10 minutes of posting a request on Thumbtack and came to my house in an hour. They assessed the problem and had to order parts. They came back when they said they would, installed the new equipment and left my house so neat you never would have known they were there. I would recommend them to anyone for HVAC services. They are prompt, neat and professional. The price was not bad either. They are my go-to guys in the future.

He came out quicker than expected by 2 hours and had everything fixed up and working tip top in less than 30 minutes. The charges were half of what Ive been quoted from other companies! Eric is an AC master and I will use this company anytime I have any HVAC problems! Will definitely be a customer for life! Thank You Eric!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
