First interaction: I got new countertops and asked Mowses to install faucet/drain. Price was confirmed ahead of time (very reasonable from from my perspective). Mowses let me know they were en route. Father and son make a great team. Interaction with them was great. They even pulled me aside to explain how everything worked together - I didn't have to ask. They used a shop vac and cleaned up after themselves. After the job I asked if they had time to check a leak in a tub. They didn't have the part but was willing to pick one up now or I can pick it up. I decided reschedule to a different day. Second interaction: On the day of, they let me know they were running late and when they were en route. They carefully worked on my tub to replace the cartridge which was probably original. On the same trip I had them replace the expansion tank on my hot water heater. Again, price was confirmed ahead of time. I appreciate knowing how much I need to spend for a job and not being surprised by other charges. They cleaned up after themselves and were pleasant to interact with. I would recommend Mowses Home Services to others.

George arrives early and saying he works hard would be an understatement. For the entire six hours he just busted his ass completing one project and going to the next. No lunch break, no smoke break, hardly took time to grab a water. If you need work done around the house, I would highly recommend him. We will be using his service again.

I cannot say enough about this company, along with the professionalism of Tim and his staff!! I have used his services several times and will continue to do so!! He was called in at the last minute to repair a water system that was installed by another company over a Holiday weekend. Woke up the next day to NO water at all in the house. Could not get ahold of the original company. I called Tim at Advanced water, Not only did he repair the existing system, he installed a new well pump for me. Still continuing to have issues with the old system, I had Advanced water install their water softener system instead. The rust is gone and water quality is now at 100%. I also have a rental property that was experiencing water issues. He came out installed a water softener system with in the same day of placing a call to his company. He also resolved a problem with the showerhead in the bathroom with low water pressure. He does regularly maintain both systems here at my home as well as my rental - salt, etc. I would highly refer this company for any of your water needs.

Beneficial Water Systems did an outstanding job of chlorinating/disinfecting my well and whole house. Matt was prompt, professional and very knowledgeable of all aspects of well, pumps, water softeners and water systems. His professional service included a free test of his work by a certified Florida laboratory. He also provided me with unsolicited advice with my RO system. I plan to utilize Matt's company again for next project. Great service.

I called RDP Services after having the Plumbing Company who had installed our GE water softener come look at the unit. They said the unit would cost more to fix than to have it replaced and tried to sell me a highly overpriced unit for out needs. I decided to get another opinion and that's when Robert from RDP Services came out the day after I called him. Best decision I ever made. Robert was extremely knowledgeable, professional and thorough. He went over the entire unit and was able to fix our problem. He did not try and up sell us on things we did not need. He should me what the problem parts were and replaced them. The unit is back up and running like new. I could not be more pleased by the service we received from Robert and would highly recommend him to anyone who needs water softener or water filtration repairs.

I had a clogged kitchen sink. I have had this issue, ongoing for several years. One person guaranteed that it was going to be fixed. He was one before Paul. Needless to say, they did not. Before that three others. One said it was because my septic tank needed to be cleaned. Did that. Then they said $350 to "blow" out my pipes. $350 an hour! NO!!!! Called in another plumber. He snaked it . 10 minutes later, he says he can't do it and to call someone with electric tools. SMH So in desperation, I finally after days of trying to baby it, and nothing working, I finally decided to try yet again to find, hopefully, what in my mind was a fair, reasonable and honest plumber, I happened onto Thumbtack. Thank you. I filled out the request, and not really expecting much to be honest. Within an hour I received a bid. A very very reasonable price from only one and it was Paul. He offered to come the next morning, which happened to be Labor Day. I did not answer for two days, and after receiving a reminder, I finally agreed, I am so happy that I did. Paul is exactly whaI had a clogged kitchen sink. I have had this issue, ongoing for several years. One person guaranteed that it was going to be fixed. He was one before Paul. He offered to come the next morning, which happened to be Labor Day. I did not answer for two days, and after receiving a reminder, I finally agreed, I am so happy that I did. Paul is exactly who I had hoped for...pleasant, professional, fair, reasonable and honest. He came in and started right away with the electric snake. He said he could feel it. He worked with it a while. Then he used the industrial water ram (I had to look it up...lol). All this time he is visually monitoring the flow of water. Waiting for it to whirlpool down the drain. Then, finally, he brought out the handy dandy old-fashioned plumbers' tool...yep, a plunger. He then worked with his body weight to plunge through the rest of the clog he'd broken with his other tools. Finally, THE WHIRLPOOL!! He ran the water several minutes. It has been great to wash dishes all at once. Not having to wash in intervals, waiting for the water to drain. If that wasn't enough, he offered to clean up the mess AND TO put everything back under the sink. I appreciated the offer, but told him that I would do it...happily. I will definitely recommend him to my family and friends. I RECOMMEND HIM TO ANY AND ALL THAT READ THIS REVIEW. THANK YOU PAUL!! THANK YOU THUMBTACK!

Jerry was on time and diligent at completing the job. Although there were a few glitches along the way, he stuck with it and finished the job in a quality fashion. He was very customer-focused and apologized for the length of time the job took. He would not stop until the job was done right. Jerry is just that type of guy and I will use him again in a heart beat. Very impressed with the quality and price of the water heater replacement.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
