Did an outstanding job on our wood floor and stairs installation. On time to start and finish the job. Very professional and his costs beat the other estimates I received. No hidden fees. I highly recommend him to any family and friends interested in wood floor installation.

My sister and elderly parents hired Arnold and team to install safety bars in bathrooms, in living room and outside in concrete wall. We are always hesitant about hiring, however, We are beyond pleased to have hired this team of workers. They are experienced, neat and quick. They offer friendly advice and are fair in their price. Their work speaks for itself. We are very happy with their work and would continue to hire them in the future.

Nelson sent an installer to install 6x24 wood look porcelain tile in my master bedroom and enclosed porch along with new baseboard and crown molding. The installer was very punctual and professional and did a fantastic job of laying the tile on a very uneven concrete floor. He did a beautiful job and in the end both floors are incredibly flat with no "toe kickers". I will definitely be contacting Nelson for other jobs I need done around the house. Thank you Nelson and Estenio! Oh yeah, and the best part is, the pricing was very reasonable!

I would definitely hire Gentle Hands Handyman Services again. They were trustworthy, considerate, and dedicated to high quality work (which was painstaking--cutting through concrete to install a dog door). They purchased what I needed, then as they started to drill, covered their area to minimize dust, and cleaned up after. They obviously care about helping and even came out on a holiday weekend to complete the job. The price was low, and I thought they deserved more than they asked. I would trust these guys if I had to let them work alone...they're that honest and that good.

John came the same day I called and we discussed what I wanted done. He had some very good suggestions and with very little dickering we agreed to a price for him to construct a 24 by 12 concrete patio and remove the old paver bricks and old sidewalk. He came the very next day and began the demo work and some prep work. (This was on a Saturday) On Monday his crew was here on time, laid out the forms and cleared out the necessary grass and soil. The concrete arrived about 11:30 am and by 1 :00 pm the patio was poured and looking great. They did the finishing work, removed the forms and my new patio was done and finished. He also repaired a broken driveway spot at the same time. Great Job! Great People to deal with! Great people doing the work. If I ever need concrete work done again, John Campbell gets the call. I highly recommend John Campbell. He does what he says he will do and then some. He is there when he says he will be there. He is a man of his word. KUDOS to John and his workers!

Jesse did a great job on the installation of a chandelier and 3 kitchen island pendant lights. He also repaired several ceiling fan and outdoor lights that had not worked. So far they are all now working. He also assembled a TV console for me which was not in my original request. That was also done very well. My only concern was that his English was not good, so communications were not as easy as I would have liked. But as for the quality of his work, I would hire him again.

I first met Keith in 2006 when we hired him to paint the interior of our new house. We also had him hang the ceiling fans, install hardware on all cabinets, install shelving, and hang pictures. We liked working with Keith immensely, and we had a lot of work for him to get our house move-in ready. His work was impeccable, his rates were very reasonable, and he had a great sense of humor. Over the last nine years, Keith has been my "go to guy" for handyman work, be it plumbing, pressure cleaning, painting, hanging wall art, repair work, and an array of jobs I'm sure I'm forgetting. Recent work includes pressure washing the driveway, sidewalk, and eaves, painting the porch floor, painting and replacing the hardware on the front and back doors, and painting two bedrooms. I've already booked him for my next project! I can't say enough about Keith's work performance, fairness, honesty, and integrity. I have felt blessed all these years to be able to count on him whenever I have a problem or a new idea that requires his help.

Will Ruiz and his company My House Aluminum gave us an excellent experience in replacing our driveway. They tore out the old driveway and removed the concrete. Then replaced it with brand new concrete. The entire project was done exactly according to the timeline that was laid out. And, it came in at exactly the price as quoted.

Our project was driveway, walkway & entry to our front door. Concrete driveway was mess with cracks. A.A.A. pavers had very competitive fair pricing. Concrete removal, ground prep & leveling, paver installation, paver sealing was all completed in 4.5 days start to finish. Amazing! Coming back today for excess block pick up and minor clean up. Beautiful finished product. A.A.A. paver & construction LLC does quality work and pays close attention to detail. Mr. DaSilva was very good to work with and addressed all our questions and concerns as the project moved forward. Would recommend this company strongly to anyone looking to have paver work done. before & after photo's attached

We hired John to remove a tile floor on our house that had been improperly installed. John worked us into his schedule and came on time, ready to work. He and his helper worked tirelessly to remove old tiles and thinset in order to bring our concrete floor back to smooth. It wasn't an easy job. John has been very accommodating in working to a mutually convenient schedule as we have a house full of furniture to work around and the entire existing floor must come up. When they left, they cleaned everything up and hauled all the old tile and thinset away. Nice job!!

By my own admission, I am rather picky and meticulous, so hiring anyone for a home improvement project is a bit stressful. But, after seven years it was time to get rid of some of the "builder special" carpet and tile in our home and replace it with hardwood. After spending several months (that's right, months) looking at options, reading reviews, and meeting with providers, I finally settled on Floor Coverings International. I couldn't be happier with the decision. Kent was very helpful and patient as my wife and I looked through the many wood options available, providing us sample after sample until we found just the right product. He offered several great ideas and some excellent advice - both in terms of looks and functionality - that really worked out well. His price was very competitive: not the cheapest, but considering the quality of product and workmanship it was by far the best value. Once we made the decision on what we wanted, the installation process got underway quickly. The first day was dedicated to tearing out the old carpet and tile and preparing the concrete floors. The workers were excellent about containing the mess - tearing up tile is hard, dusty work - and did the job quickly and professionally. The hardwood installer was second-to-none. A true craftsman that took pride in his work. The job wasn't rushed, and attention was paid to the details. Several times during the installation, he would point out something he had done (a tricky cut or difficult transition) and say "see how I did that there...doesn't it look great?" He was right, it did! Just as importantly, it was a pleasure to have him in our home. After just a few days, when the job was done, our kids were actually sad to see him go! To top it all off, both Kent and the installer independently made it a point to stop by a couple days after the job was completed to check and make sure we didn't have any issues or concerns, and to answer questions. It was great to work with a company that takes pride in their work and treats their customers so well. The end product not only meets our expectations, but exceeds them. It is the best looking hardwood floor I've seen in any home. My wife and I have both commented several times that we regret waiting so long to do it! This experience was so positive, we're already thinking about what to do with the floors in other parts of our home. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys to friends and family.

Hired Florida Total Pavement for several concrete installation projects at my home. Company and staff were delightful and respectful. Answered my questions and telephone calls even on weekends which most Companies don't do so that was differently an added bonus. Would and will be hiring again for other pavement projects along with recommending to family and friends.

Advanced Concrete Solutions recently did a driveway extension and leveling of a sidewalk lift for us. This company responded right away to our online request for quote, and actually showed up, on time for our appointment. Michael was thorough in providing his quote, he explained the process and discussed the timeline for completing the project. Had a slight ‘hiccup’ along the way, but issue was resolved and the professional way the Rippy brothers handled it was impressive. I would certainly recommend Advanced Concrete Solutions to anyone looking for concrete work. Keep up the good work! Carol Riverview, FL

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
