There are no words to describe the outstanding job done by Teddy and Matthew. We had mulch and worthless plants taken out, stone, new edging and plants brought in. They resodded 3/4 of my property and repaired and made my irrigation system functional. Their crew was hard working and efficient. After having problems with contractors in my home state of New York I can not say enough about their honesty, efficiency, good humor, and price.

I have used many contractors over the years. I can not say enough good things about Alvarez Electric. They were beyond professional, accommodating, and very good at what they did. I had an out of the ordinary electrical project, and their problem solving abilities and commitment toward addressing my needs was extraordinary. I highly recommend them.

This guy is awesome! He gives you an estimate, does what he says he's going to do and does it to perfection! He is professional, friendly and an expert in his craft. His dad is pretty awesome too :) I hired him to fix a leak and install a new farmhouse sink and faucet in my circa 1920 home. I am going to hire him again to install a gas fireplace. Definitely the best experience I've had with a contractor in a long time!

I hired Two Tigers and a Truck to demo my kitchen. They were available the next day, and quoted about $1000 less than my kitchen contractor was going to charge! They called about an hour before the scheduled time to see if they could come early...awesome! Once they arrived, they were so friendly and very careful not to damage my wood floors. They worked quickly and did a great job cleaning up after. It was a pleasure...I wish everyone was this easy to work with!

Jorge fixed leaks on old existing porch. He did such a great job, i hired him to repair roof at my daughter's house. He is very respectful, knowledgeable, and offers choices when it comes to the repairs. His price was reasonable for the amount of work required. I would definitely recommend Jorge as a roof contractor.

I just wanted to leave few words about the shopping experience we had with Nelson. Our project was a complete repainting and reflooring of our house plus few other minor improvements. While we did not award this project to Nelson and his team I want to say thank you to him for being very thorough with the project, answering all of our question and providing competitive quote. He was very professional and helpful with all of our requirements and he was out first choice out of 4 contractors to do this project. Thank you and good luck. Steve

Lou is an amazing handyman. He is very professional, he came in and assessed the project and provided me with a quote, even though he encountered a lot of issues due to the previous contractors work he still maintained his original assessment and completed the project with professionalism. I will be contacting him again for my future projects for sure and i would advise the next client to do the same.

Sylvester just finished our popcorn removal and painting of our entire house and of remodeling of our bathroom counters and cabinets, I am so happy with the results, I felt compelled to write a review. A lot of times, people only write reviews for bad service or work that was poorly done, so I thought I'd take the time to recognize some excellent work. I was beyond impressed with Sylvester. After we had a lot of trouble with another contractor doing our kitchen counters and cabinets, we knew we had to find someone different for our bathrooms and other things we needed done. We had at least 4 different contractors come over to check out the job and give us quotes. Sylvester actually came in at the best price. On top of that, he really worked with us to get it within our budget. With a baby on the way and limited funds, his flexibility was MUCH appreciated. Not one of the other contractors was willing to work with us in that way. I would definitely hire Sylvester again, He was such a pleasure to work with. He's just a great guy all around and his work was way better than we could have hoped for. I'd say we got more than expected for the money we paid.

I did many remodeling projects and I know how difficult it is to find good and reliable proffesional people. It was a great experience to work with this contractor. They addressed all my concerns, did all the work as discussed in a short time, had the worksite clean all the tme, and actually did some extra work at no extra charge. The job came out beutiful. with all the great work they do, high quality and great workmanship, their price was lower then the other quotes received. I will definetlly use them in all my future projects.

Where should I begin?! James was absolutely AMAZING! I had a very unexpected ER in my family and he made the time to not only get the original task done BUT I asked for add on's and he took them on with a smile on his face. He's truly a great professional who is passionate about his work and shows true pride. He made me feel comfortable knowing that the flooring was way over due and I was embarrassed. He brought his Dad, Mark for some bonding time and helper JJ for the last day. Everyone was so friendly and warm, wonderful people. Pricing is competitive and the craftsmanship is top notch. I feel very fortunate to have met a great company. I would and will recommend him and Cavalier Contractors to anyone that needs work done! I promise you won't regret it! Smiles from ear to ear! Thank you James, Mark and JJ. I can bring my father home, thanks to your hard work and dedication on a tight schedule!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
