- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
With young new students (3-4 yr. olds) we begin by discussing the piano keyboard and play a listening and repeating game on the piano. This game begins with one or two notes and gradually includes short musical phrase of songs they are familiar with. By the end of the 2nd or 3rd lesson, the child is able to play a complete piece. We older students and adults discuss past musical experiences and if this exists, I ask the student to play for for me. This can be something they know by heart or a piece we pick out together for them to play. As soon as I determine the student's ability, we discuss and decide on the approach to be taken for future lessons. With voice students I begin with a series of vocal warm ups with student repeating my examples and then together we select songs to work on. Guitar lessons consists of learning strumming, finger picking, reading the notes and playing of folk songs, some easy pop music and classical guitar music. I usually play guitar with the student and do a lot of playing an example and having for the student play the same example.
