I initially found Franklin while looking for someone to handle popcorn ceiling removal in my new home. As the project moved forward we had him do drywall repair as we removed a large amount of wallpaper. Franklin handled drywall skims on damaged walls, and did drywall patches where we'd removed an out-of-date intercom system. He was able to work around a very tight timetable. His rates were reasonable, and his work looks great. I will definitely recommend his work to friends, and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

These guys did a super job on painting our remodeled home built in the 50s. They were walls taken down and a lot of drywall repairs both in the walls and the ceiling, crown molding, wallpaper, etc.. They were prompt and responsive and the house looks great afterwards. The only knock on them that I could think of is that I wish we had done a better job protecting the floor as it was a major chore cleaning up all of that drywall dust off of newly finished wood floors, but I would definitely choose these guys again!

Carlos and his crew did an outstanding job on our ever-growing project list. Originally we hired him to repaint our kitchen cabinets. We had them sprayed with laquer which is difficult and can be very messy. His crew did a great job prepping and the paint is flawless, they look brand new. Even better was the lack of any mess or overspray issues. He turned our kitchen into a sealed paint booth and covered everything in plastic. We were so happy with the work and price, we ended up repainting nearly the entire interior of the house. In the past we did our own painting, but hired painters to do a couple of rooms 2 years ago. I was satisfied with their work because it looked better than what we did ourselves. I was shocked when Carlos finished the first room and saw the quality of his work. Not only was I embarrassed by my painting skills, I was kicking myself for being satisfied with the work of the previous painters. Carlos does extensive prep work. He sanded the walls and removed the flaws left from nail holes, paint runs, and bad drywall work. My neighbors were so impressed they hired him too. All the work was finished on time, on budget, and beyond my expectations.

I hired Norman for his wallpaper removal, wall repair, and paint job for the entire house. Norman and his team did an excellent thorough job! He didn't rush and was meticulous in his work. Not to mention, he gave us an amazing deal. We loved how he and his team always cleaned up after every day and didn't leave a mess, very professional! I would highly recommend him. Thank you for all your hard work.

Did an excellent job of stripping large amount of wallpaper in two rooms, prepping walls and painting while keeping the areas clean. Cost was very reasonable considering the attention to detail and time that the job took. Am scheduling them for more painting.

I called Sam to set an appointment, then was called out of town suddenly. He was gracious about the delay and very efficient when he did come to assess the job. I plan to hire him to help whenever I need something done. I also recommended him to my sisters, who also life in Athens. Good man, good job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

    • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
    • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
    • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
    • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
    • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
    • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
    • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
    • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
