- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I fell into it, actually. I wanted to work in retail, and ended up in the cosmetics department. From there I sat under artists who I believed were excellent, and one of my mentors was a makeup artist in television and film. She saw my growth and potential, and landed me a music video gig on set with Janelle Monae! I've been absorbed in the beauty of makeup ever since!
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
The proof is in the pictures! If you can see yourself or your inspiration in one of the beauties in a portfolio, then that's the artist for you!
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Just as much as I'm an artist, I'm a client, too. Being a performing artist, I'm regularly getting my face made up, even well before I became an makeup artist. With this experience, I have a holistic perspective of what my clients like and want to accomplish with their makeup.
