We used Next Door Relocators twice in a matter of 2 months. Once to put our furnishings from our 5 bedroom house into a storage facility and then 2 months later into our new 4 bedroom house. They were professional and didnt fool around with chattering. We especially liked the fact that nothing was broken. We would definitely use them again and have referred them to a relative moving out of state Kenneth and Irene Sears

Thank you Jeremy & Demetris! I highly recommend Big Deal Movers for local moving. Needed help getting our daughters furniture from upstairs bedroom into a moving truck. Big Deal Movers not only handled that quickly & easily, they helped with a few extra items (removing curtain rods and removing TV & TV wall mount) that I forgot to put on the quote. Jeremy was very easy to work with, efficient and I especially appreciated that he was able to get this done within two days of my thumbtack post!! Will use these guys again I'm sure!

Above and beyond. Ronnie and his team are a must hire for anyone preparing for a move. They were 15min early, wrapped all our furniture in blankets and wrap for protection, worked fast and were very friendly. When Ronnie accidentally left with my apartment fab he went above and beyond, tracked back across Atlanta after his second move of the day and returned it to us. I highly recommend RLJM moving.

I just relocated to douglasville from another state. I had made arrangements for another moving company to unload my belongings from the trailer. When that company did not show up, i went to thumbtack and found in and out movers. Carlos, called me within 15 minutes. He assured me that he could be to me within an hour and his prices were outstanding. Orlando and jay arrived to my new apartment in one hour as promised and they had the best attitude. Both guys were friendly and very hard working. My move was truly a last minute, same day order for them, and they treated me as though i was a long term client. They hauled my things up three flights of stairs and smiled the entire time while doing so. They worked hard, when i asked what could i do to help, they said "tell me where to put it and we'vegot the rest." That they did. Even when i asked them to move something twice they did! In and out movers turned a nightmare into a daydream. Thank you carlos, orlando and jay.......

I had an AMAZING experience with Tate the Great Moving services. I used them for packing and moving. I provided all of my packing materials and hired the staff for packing. They packed my materials with care and labeled all boxes appropriately. I then used them for moving from Acworth, GA to Atlanta, GA. The guys handled all of my items with great care and treated them like they were their own. They packed the truck very meticulously and ensured all of my items were safe during transport. Before this move, I moved from North Carolina to Acworth, GA. The movers I used then damaged a lot of my items. Not only did Tate's crew take extra special care of my damaged items, they also made recommendations for how I could have them repaired and in some cases they made the small repairs for me. Dexter, Will, and Shaheed were GOD sent!! I could not have asked for a better crew and I told Tate that I want the same three guys the next time I move. You will not be disappointed with this moving crew. They have an excellent spirit, and excellent leader, and they truly do LOVE what they do!! Two thumbs WAY up!!!

After getting moved out of old apartment and into my new place, the last thing I wanted to do was properly deep clean the old place, for the move-out inspection. Rather than pay the management company $$ to clean a dirty apartment, I decided to hire Natasha at Top Notch. I am so glad I did! She was right on time, and the apartment looked great! I was able to get through the inspection without issue.

Elite Movers were very professional and courteous. They were kind enough to move us within a day of reserving, since we had another moving company that did not do a good job. They really helped us meet the deadline to move out of our house. I would definitely recommend them. It was a pleasant moving experience and moving is never fun! :-)

I highly recommend MyPorter for your moving needs, they completely exceeded my expectations when it came to my recent move (4/30/18)! I hate moving but have unfortunately have had to make several over the past few years. I've never had a terribly negative experience with past movers, per se, but I had just started to assume companies generally under-quoted moving costs initially and you would end up paying more in the end. MyPorter changed my perception of moving companies completely, they actually beat my quoted time by a full hour! My movers were efficient and professional and I cannot thank them enough for their help!

The guys were great! We had a somewhat difficult move today (moving from two apartments on different floors), but the crew was very accommodating. Brandon, the supervisor, was friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. Unloading was the quickest part. I was surprised with how fast it was done with only two men. Hire these guys. They did an awesome job and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Great service with a move from Chicago to Florida.Much easier than last time when using a national moving carrier because they could not have items next day at new location since my load was less than a full moving van and got merged with other loads. Pick Up Movers was more then enough for a two bedroom unit. The guys worked hard in a tight space and did not damage any items with their careful blanket wrapping and blanket on porch when titling to get thru a narrow space.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
