We were SO impressed with Todd. He did framing, drywall and trim. He did a flawless job. His customer service was amazing! We hired him at the last minute and were in a hurry. He came in that evening and finished by the next morning, as he had promised. He did this job within our timeframe, even though he was also doing other jobs at the time.

My backdoor threshold was rotten and needed to be replaced. All other contractors indicated that I would have to order a new door, but Mr. Wilkins said he could replace the damaged wood and reseal it. He quoted a fair price and was able to schedule the job quickly. Due to some of the water damage, my wood floor needed repair as well. I had some extra pieces and he was able to replace the floor too. Work was done in a few hours. I am really happy with the work performed.

Through Thumbtack, I've worked with Anthony and M.O.C. for a couple of years now. The experience has been great. Anthony is very responsive, professional, cost-competitive and personable. My home projects have ranged from re-framing doors and lock installation, to painting two-story foyers and carpet cleaning. I would highly recommend this service provider for your home improvement and maintenance needs.

easy to communicate with; on time and followed directions. Available immediately. Unlike so many handymen and contractors in this region who need to be hand held and want to cut corners, I enjoyed working with Buck and will use his services again.

Hired Bobby to do some remodeling to get our house in shape for selling. he had a lot of good ideas on changes, fixes, upgrades that would enhance the value. He provided a detailed estimate at a fair price and did an excellent job in performing all the work. he even went above and beyond and did some work not in the original estimate...and did not charge us! he always showed up when he said he would and worked long hours to complete the project when he said he would. I had planned to hire several different contractors for the project (remodeling, painting, landscaping, general clean-up) but Bobby was able to do the entire project saving us time in trying hire and manage several separate contractors. I would highly recommend Bobby & Christian Brother Remodeling for any remodeling project.

As an engineer we have a saying that goes "good, fast, cheap; pick two). We got pushed back a little further than originally anticipating but as I worked in construction and weather it was understandable. They were BY FAR the lowest price on architectural shingles and lower with this price than all but one or two who quoted 3-tab shingles. I didn't see any nails on the ground after the job and Ray told us we could load any trash besides paint and something else before the trash company picked up the container a couple days later. They pay per pound as that's the only way I've ever found plus haul and deliver and maybe number of days. Ray was easy to work with and I know we had some plywood sheets replaced. Cover your stuff in the attic as there was a mess up there which I should of anticipated as he said he replaced several sheets. There were nail penetrations in the attic roof (quite a few) which I could bend sideways with a hammer. I'm not stating that last part to complain but more so as a courtesy to the business for future clients. We feel we got much more than we paid for which is VERY rare when dealing with contractors. If you want super pretty attic ceailing it will cost you and the competitors who bid a lot more didn't guarantee it to us except one who did use a better pad but was also a grand and a half less than TWICE what The Art of Home Improvement charged. I would recommend to my family members and friends in a second (unless they want a metal roof which I don't know if they do or not.)

James did a great job installing an exterior door on the back of my garage that needed a little extra with the framing. We agreed on a price and he picked up the door and installed on the same day. Pretty straightforward. Price was reasonable for his quality work.

In a time when there are HUNDREDS of contractors, when one finds a contractor that delivers amazing service (customer service) and a quality finish, one holds on to this contractor. OJ is that contractor. Afraid the word will get out and they will get too busy for my however, they deserve it. Thank you guys for amazing jobs you have done for me on my kitchen, flooring and decking. I am a detail oriented (to an extreme) person and the end finish was always flawless! Outstanding group!

I hired Problem Solvers Contracting to tile my kitchen backsplash. He and his team did an excellent job. They were knowledgeable and offered me some designer ideas for my kitchen renovation that turned out to be a perfect solution. I love my new backsplash. I've already hired them for my next project...laying down new laminate flooring. I can't wait!

Ryan helped quickly get a house ready to list on the market. He completed a variety of outdoor repair projects and did a really nice job with some outside deck and porch work. He was very knowledgeable about refinishing, recommended the best type of product for the work and even selected the color himself which turned out to be a perfect solution.

We've hired Boss Contracting for 2 projects now, and we are planning out more with THIS company in mind. We full-heartedly support and recommend such a stellar business as BOSS Contracting. Vernon has a very extensive background in so many subjects regarding his work: we've had kitchen work; cabinet work; bannister repairs and more. A big plus about this company is that Vernon can help you think through what you want so that it adds value and pleasure to the work. We didn't realize how needed and helpful this was in contracting work until we met him and had realized just how little contractors actually help you to prepare for something you might know little about. And the quality of work was bar-NONE for the price! Go with BOSS Contracting, you won't be disappointed!

Brent was great to work with! He was prompt with his on-line response, he was on time to evaluate the project, is very knowledgeable about the siding/trim replacement, and gave me a verbal quote before he left. After hiring him for the project, he and his crew arrived on-time every morning, and typically worked into the evenings to complete the job on schedule. He is a hands-on owner, with attention to detail, and works side by side with his crew. You can count on him to be on-site, and personally manage the quality of the work. I’ve hired several contractors throughout the years, and right now, I have a hard time thinking of any that were better to work with than Brent. Definitely two 👍 👍!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
