Look at the photographer's website and assess the quality and design of image! Lighting is important, as well as location! If you want power lines and a factory in the background of your photo make sure your photographer can make it at least artistic! Also check out how people are posed in photos- I am very particular in making sure poses look natural and tasteful.

That choosing an aesthetically pleasing photographer is soooo important! With that said, consider your price range and how important these photos are to you.
