What is henna?
Henna (Lawsonia inermis, also known as hina, henna tree, mignonette tree, Egyptian privet) is a flowering plant that grows 12-15 feet high and comes from the sole species of the Lawsonia genus. The English name "henna" comes from the Arabic (?inn?). The name henna also refers to the dye prepared from the henna plant and the art of temporary tattooing based on those dyes. Henna has been used for centuries to dye skin, hair, and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool, and leather.
What to Expect
Henna takes about 20 to 30 minutes to dry, depending on your body temperature.
For the best color, leave henna on for about 4-5 hours and avoid water.
The length of time for application depends on the design.
Small designs can take as little as 5 minutes, while larger designs can take a couple of hours.
For bridal henna that covers both hands and feet, it takes about 2 hours. Intricate designs take more time to apply, but are very beautiful.
