Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

I would highly recommend Niche` Photography to anyone. Sanchez made it his priority to take photos that I was satisfied with, and he showed me every picture and asked for feedback throughout the whole session. They did an excellent job of shooting and editing photos that I can use for professional purposes, while still capturing my personality. Again, highly recommend!

I was so happy with the photo shoot that my fiancé and I had with Krystle about a week ago, and I am so please with the results. She didn't take long (a little over a week) to edit all our photos and send them digitally back to me. I'm so happy with the results! Thank you Krystle!!

Where do I even start... Keira was absolutely amazing! I was blindly looking for a photographer in Atlanta, and stumbled upon Thumbtack and the search led me to Keira! She was super personable and was so interested in hearing about Mark and I, where we met, and our vision for the shoot. I loved this because she took the time to get to know us. At the actual shoot, it was like Mark and I had known Keira forever! She was super fun and welcoming, and she guided us through the entire shoot. The pictures are absolutely amazing and I couldn’t be happier! If you are looking for a photographer, Keira tomorrow is your girl!! Thank you so much for capturing this sweet sweet moment for us! We are so grateful.

I had a wonderful experience shooting with Lindsey. I was impressed by her ability to use the location, the light, and her encouraging personality to keep me engaged and comfortable during the shoot. She was creative in her choice of settings. She has an eye for capturing special moments, and the whole expeience felt very natural, like my picture was being taken with by friend. We took 82 photos in an hour and I love them all!

Elizabeth did an incredible job in providing us beautiful outdoor family photos. There were 5 of us including a 2 and a 3 year old (who lose patience for sitting still and posing quite easily) and Elizabeth was able to capture an array of photos that will bring us sweet memories for years to come. Thank you so much for working with us in the midst of such a hectic day. The photos you delivered give absolutely no indication of the chaos that went on during the shoot ;-). An absolute professional.

Brought a great energy to the shoot. We had a couple hiccups but her ability to keep positive while acknowledging the situation helped me be at ease. I was stressed and upset and she noticed while keeping good energy and assuring me I will love my photos.

Securing DV Photo & Video for my baby shower was the best decision! AnMarie was punctual, professional, and above-all a delightful addition to the days events. She made sure to shoot every detail of the baby shower: decor, greetings, people, gifts, food, candid and posed pictures. She even gave us a 15 minute courtesy before our booking time expired to ensure we got in all of the last minute pictures we wanted. I received an email with all of the photos the day after the shower. And, needless to say- the photos came out beautifully! Thank you AnMarie and DV Photo & Video. I am beyond appreciative of your service and will certainly use you in the future.

I contacted thumbtack for a professional photographer in Georgia. I am not from the area. I wanted to give our daughter a gift for her birthday. 5 companies contacted me. Out of them all, E. Elise Photography was the company that answered my question and made me feel most comfortable with setting up an appointment. Erin was willing to travel to anyplace my daughter choose. She was very open with dates and was will to change the date we set up because of a planning error. On the day of the shoot, she not only contacted our daughter but me as well. Once they were finished, Erin contacted me to let me know that everything went great and my daughter and her family were a delight to work with. I have not seen the finish product as of yet, the shoot was over last weekend but, I'm sure we will be very satisfied. I definitely would use E. Elise Photography again and give her name out to friends and family. Thank you Erin! Sue Friedrich

I hired Anthony because I was looking for a relatively cheap photographer to shoot a wedding reception I was having in Atlanta following my wedding ceremony in Seattle. He was very attentive all through the planning process even though I live so far away and wasn't able to meet with him beforehand. He had lots of ideas and was willing and able to meet with my mom at the venue to choose locations for the photos. He also successfully sold me his DJ services, which worked perfectly for what I needed for my small event. He was a pleasure to work with from start to finish, always on time and always communicating his plans and progress with us. He sent a CD of unedited versions of all of our photos and a thumb drive of the photos we selected to have edited -- we appreciated having rights to all of the photos. Ultimately, we got some good photos of myself and my husband and of us with our family. We didn't get any shots of the best moments during our first dance, the turns and the dip at the end -- that was the only thing that really disappointed us. For the amount we spent on more than 4 hours of wedding photography we got some great photos to cherish along with positive memories.

I had a portrait session with Steve, while I was visiting Georgia, to essentially capture myself at this age and stage and to celebrate life. Steve was warm and easy-going. He took the time to make sure he got the lighting right and captured an array of emotions, for variety. He created a fun and relaxed environment that allowed for creativity and experimentation. I came away with numerous splendid shots - I had trouble choosing. His retouching skills are stellar. One of the final shots looked like I could use it for a casting call or on my IMDB page, one day. I am very, very pleased with the results and will cherish these images (and the experience) for years to come. This was my first professional photo shoot as an adult and I'm already looking forward to future shoots. I certainly highly recommend Steve Glass. Thank you, Steve.

Where do I begin? Shantel was AMAZING!!!!!!! I had the privilege of working with Shantel to cover my sons first birthday party. I was traveling for the party to Atlanta from Florida. I definitely plan on hiring her again in the future to do a family photoshoot for me. She was so sweet and friendly. All of my guests loved her presence and I definitely have been recommending her to my family and friends in Atlanta. She was polite and took initiative at the party to get to know my guests and take photos of them with their consent. I would highly recommend booking her for any kind of event or shoot!! Thank you again Shantel for taking such memorable photos for us!
