Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

I had a disastrous situation, in which my kitchen ceiling just caved in! The house was built in 1937, and the sheetrock was from a remodel in the 50s. Too much insulation, they used only nails and no screws, so one day the ceiling just said "I'm through!" and caved in. I heard the cracking begin as I was at the other end washing dishes, then there was chaos. I contacted Filipe through Tumbtack, and he answered within 2 hours; came out to give me an estimate and moved me to the front of his work load because of nature of the disaster. They came out 3 days after he gave the estimate, and it took 2 days to finish the job, which was more than a notion! Small attic passages made it difficult to get the original insulation back in so he had to rent the EcoGreen machine and blow new insulation in. Even though this was unexpected, he took it in stride and still got it done within the two days. I highly recommend him and his services. He was reasonable, punctual and very communicative. Excellent service!

I gave Doug and his crew the impossible job of repainting my entire 1600 square foot condo, repairing many, many drywall issues, taking down wallpaper and covering dark and metallic paint. Not only was his estimate the lowest, he got it done in 5 days! The condo looks perfect!!! This is the only company that I will ever use. Not only are they fast and professional, Doug is a genuinely nice guy!

I’m really satisfied with the work Aaron did. I needed to push my appointment back a bit, and he was flexible, which I appreciated. The job was done well, efficiently, and he made sure I was satisfied before he left. Great quality at a great price. I’ll definitely be connecting with this contractor again if I need one in the future.

Mr. Lawrence and his team came out to address a mystery leak in my garage. The Lawrence team found the leak, replaced the faulty plumbing and repaired the sheetrock. Certainly recommend for your handyman needs.

General Contracting - I had several projects to be done as we were getting to put my home of 8 years on the market (kitchen leak, kitchen bay box, shutters, paint, deck). After reading all the reviews, I decided to contact Michael to get a quote. Due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t originally meet him on Friday or Saturday, so he took it upon himself to come on a Sunday (which is pretty unheard of since most contractors usually don’t work on Sundays) to assess the job and do his pre-inspection. The quote was more than reasonable for the amount of work I demanded and Michael was hired… All jobs were done in a timely manner; it took approximately 2 weeks due to the weather and schedule conflicts. He kept me informed of what was being done each day and sent pictures of any findings needing attention. I would call Michael and TNT Building and Remodeling LLC if I ever need any work done on my future home and would recommend them to anyone.

The person who actually worked were a thorough professional. I had my 4-bed townhome re-painted through him. The only disappointment was the clarification about the job work. He did not finish my 2 main doors from the outside since it was (as per him) exterior paint and it's different than the interior paint for which I hired him. I recommend him with caution for clarifying the actual job rather putting in general like I did "all doors and all trims and all walls. But overall he is a good contractor to work with.

I was so impressed with the two-man crew who came to do the work at my house. They were thorough, careful, and checked in with me throughout the job to make sure I was satisfied. Even when I decided that I needed one more coat of paint to cover my formerly very dark cabinets, they willingly complied. They were able to achieve a ceiling repair that most other contractors had said would be much more difficult. They handled it like a breeze. I like the little touches, like going out to their truck on a smoke break, rather than smoking anywhere near the house. I will definitely use this company again !!

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

I set up and scheduled an appointment for installing a security door, but ended up unable to attend myself! Luckily my wife was able to be free that day and the gentleman that came by was lovely according to her. Eric, the contractor, showed her the available and compatible options at the Home Depot 2 turns away and also did some other door-work. We had doors that were too snug, a storm door that didn't have its catch-coil, and another door that didn't have a key when we bought the house. He made a quote only knowing of the security door and hardly budged from it. Such generosity truly is a blessing, and I'll definitely be passing his number on to friends and our real-estate agent. Good work done pleasantly!

I asked Everardo to sheetrock a house that I was flipping. It was stripped down to the studs. It was a big job. He asked a lot of questions to make sure he understood what I wanted. There were some challenging parts but he went above and beyond to get the job done.. Everardo did the job fast and on time and for a good price. I'll be recommending him to my other flipper friends. Hire Freddie today.

We were on a tight deadline and these guys came in with an extremely competitive bid, ready to work. They finished ahead of schedule and did an excellent job with all of our projects, big and small. We had demo, sheetrock, and several patch jobs...not to mention six new recessed lights installed in four days! Both Bryant and Daniel were very professional, friendly, and honest the entire time and we will certainly be using them again for future projects.

Overall I am very pleased with the way my gate turned out. The only hiccup was when Keith came out he quoted me a price which I assumed was for labor and materials. Turns out it was for only labor. Yes it was stated on my quote, but everything was done on his mobile phone to process our transaction. I did not open the quote to review. We talked and it seemed great so I hired him. It has been a very rare event to have a contractor come to my house and only quote me labor and if they did, they specifically mentioned it to me while talking. I should have asked, but I felt like Keith should have stated it was for labor only. In the end Keith ate half the cost ($150 roughly) of the materials to make it right which was very much appreciated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
