I must say that until I met Justin Chin and retained him my opinion of attorneys was not a good one. I thought they were all the same and that they were crooks. Justin has showed me what a an attorney that actually cares about his clients looks like and has been there for me daily through a nasty child custody case. He has always responds quickly, via text, calls and emails, day or night and his pricing is very fair. I admire is calming manor and his confidence. He is also a Christian man that allows God to direct his steps with his cases. I would be a nervous wreck if I didn't have Justin's professionalism guiding me and representing me. I am so grateful that I was able to retain such a great quality attorney and that he has the Experience needed to take my case. Justin also is going to do my taxes. I will always refer my friends to Justin if they ever have to endur the stress of a divorce or custody case. He doesn't just represent you he puts his heart into his cases and always goes above and beyond any expectation that was set. Thank you for everything Justin. May God always bless and keep you.

I hired Mark to review a prenup that my fiancee's attorney put together -- nothing too extensive, but I wanted counsel to make sure I didn't miss anything. I don't know any family law attorneys in Atlanta, so after doing some Google searching and speaking to ones referred to me, I posted to Thumbtack. Mark reached out to me, outlined his rate structure (which is extremely reasonable, especially in comparison to what others quoted me) and we easily set up a meeting, in which he came to me at my office building. After a brief in-person intro, Mark began reviewing the document and explained each section to me to make sure I understood the language. He offered a handful of suggestions, which my fiancee's attorney has incorporated into the prenup. Working with Mark was very simple and affordable; I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to him again for counsel.

Filing for bankruptcy can be an overwhelming and trying time for someone. I searched thumbtack for local attorneys who specialized in bankruptcy cases. Of the individuals who responded, Turkessa was the most professional and prompt. I found her rates affordable and she successfully helped file my case. I was totally clueless to how this all works and do not intend to be in the same predicament again. However, Turkessa was very knowledgable and discussed the best options for someone in my position. All I had to do was provide what information I could and she took it from there! Communication was key, and Turkessa kept me informed of everything I needed to do in order to be successfully released from debt. I would recommend her services to anyone in the same unfortunate financial situation.

Ms. Bergstrom was very pleasure to speak with. She wasn't like most attorneys get to the point because all the other conversation is not important. Everything I said she listened to. Can't wait to work with her.

Carl has been my personal and corporate attorney for 10 years now. He is nothing less than amazing. He can take an irate client who is unreasonable (me) and bring me around to a reasonable understanding and conclusion to the problem. Unlike most attorneys I never feel he is "running up the bill". He is level headed, fair, and a great negotiator. I have happily recommended him to friends and fellow CEOs. Another flaw of mine is that I WANT IT NOW; and Carl has been more than responsive every time I had an urgent need.

I contacted Gina about writing wills for my spouse and myself. She gathered up the necessary information and we had our wills in our hands very quickly. I have contacted her again to update our wills. I will use her again in the future.

After several years of financial struggle, I made the difficult decision to contact an attorney to weigh the pros/cons of filing for a Chapter 7. I solicited recommendations from friends and family members. I contacted several of those recommended, but Gina was the only who returned my call in a timely manner. She was always to the point and very clear on all the details involving my Chapter 7 filing. Throughout the whole process, there were no surprises, and all went smoothly through the case discharge. I would definitely recommend her for anyone considering filing. In fact, because of my experience with her, I now think people who are struggling should not think twice as I did for so long, especially with good lawyer like Gina on their side!

Ms. Kessing first and foremost does not like attorneys. She is well equipped to handle any deceit coming from opposing attorney's. She listens intently to her clients, as well as working to educate her clients while moving through the legal process. She is great at thinking on her feet under pressure. Even better, when you contact her to speak about your case, you speak with her and not a paralegal. She is a supportive attorney from the beginning through to the end of your case. You are not just another file.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What kind of lawyer does wills?

No one likes talking about death, but it’s better than leaving your children or siblings to sort out your estate. A clearly planned will can make the time of mourning easier for everyone. An estate attorney will develop a legal will, create trusts on your behalf, and ensure the proper execution of your estate after you pass away.

Family attorneys and estate attorneys, also called probate and wills attorneys, can each prepare wills. The type of lawyer best suited to prepare your will depends on your situation. Most family attorneys provide services to prepare basic wills, including bequeathing property and personal items to family or naming a guardian for minor children. However, estate attorneys specialize in preparing wills in more complex situations. Consider hiring an estate attorney if you:

      • Have a large number of assets, especially those subject to estate taxes
      • Want to create a trust, such as allowing a spouse to live in your home until he or she dies and then leaving it to your children, or set up long-term care for a beneficiary
      • Have an ownership stake in a business
      • Expect someone to contest your will
      • Want to disinherit your spouse

How do you find a good lawyer for wills?

Estate planning is an important part of financial planning, so it’s important to find the right attorney to prepare your will. Although most family attorneys can put together a basic will, you may want one who specializes in wills and estate planning, especially if you have a lot of assets or a dependent to take care of. You may need an attorney who has expertise in planning and executing trusts and a background in taxes. Ask how the attorney charges; some charge by the hour, others have a set fee for writing wills, and some charge a percentage of the total value of the estate. Make a list of several potential wills attorneys to interview. Make sure you make a strong personal connection with your attorney — you need to be comfortable telling him or her personal, confidential information about your life, and you need to feel that the attorney is committed to solving any problems that may arise while writing your will. Also find out how long the attorney has practiced estate law and whether he or she has handled wills similar to yours.

How much does it cost to have a living will?

Either a family attorney or an estate, or wills, attorney can help you prepare a living will, either as part of your general estate planning or as an individual document. The cost typically ranges from $250 to $500, depending on your attorney’s fees; some charge by the hour, while others have a flat rate for writing a living will. Some states require living wills to be notarized, which adds an average of $5 to $15. In a living will — also called an advanced healthcare directive — you specify whether you want to be kept on life support if you become terminally ill or lapse into a persistent vegetative state. You can also answer other important questions in a living will like your preferences for tube feeding, artificial hydration and pain medication in situations when you cannot communicate your wishes on your own.

How much should an estate plan cost?

The cost of an estate plan depends largely on the number of parts it includes and the complexity of the documents. The most basic estate plan is simply a will, but it may also include designating power of attorney or a health care proxy to another person, writing a living will, or making a HIPAA authorization. The average national cost to make an estate plan ranges from $350 to $900, but can cost much more in complicated situations. For example, an estate attorney may charge only $900 to prepare a basic will providing outright distribution — meaning that property and assets are distributed upon death. Writing a more complicated will and holding assets in trusts can cost $3,000, or more. The process of creating an estate plan generally takes two to four weeks, starting with the initial consultation with the wills attorney to identify areas of concern in order to design an estate plan that fits your goals and budget. Once an estate plan is written, the attorney meets with the clients, a notary, and two neutral witnesses to review and sign the plan and associated documents.
