Russell Tanoue by Katie Young After two decades behind the lens, Russell Tanoue has become one of Hawaii's top fashion and glamour photographers, and remains in high demand. He brings out the best in actors, recording artists, models and celebrities in Hawaii and in the United States, and around the world, capturing a person's unseen beauty and creating images that can only be defined as electrifying. Tanoue is also known for creating the faces of tomorrow. A former dancer, Tanoue's work has appeared in magazines, brochures and models' and actors' portfolios, as well as on posters, CD/video covers and calendars. His client list includes such celebrities as actor Daniel Dae Kim of Lost and Hawaii 5-0, actress Laura Harring of Mulholland Drive, actress Kelly Hu, actor Jason Scott Lee, international male models Scott Milligan and Sebastian Siegle, the Playboy Playmates for Hardbodies, artist Christian Lassen, as well as recording artists, O-Shen, Raiatea Helm, Pauline Wilson and international star Anita Sarawak, to name a few. His work has taken him from Hawaii to Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. On his future destination agenda is New York and Florida. He has been the photographer of choice for MidWeek newspaper's annual swimsuit issue for the past 10 years. Tanoue's talents have also put him in front of the camera on occasion, which has also made him the subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, as well as news and entertainment programs, including E Entertainment's Wild On. Making a positive difference in the lives of people he encounters is one of his missions. To that end, he created Project Shine in 2001. Free photo sessions and makeovers to people fighting cancer and other sicknesses, teenagers rehabilitated from drug abuse and victims of domestic violence are offered through the program. Tanoue has also become one of Honolulu's premier party hosts, creating industry events that help his Project Shine or other charities, in order to help raise money to support his community work. His current monthly events happens on the last Saturday of each month are Beautiful, which is held at Pearl @ Ala Moana Shopping Center, Ho'okipa Terrace. He has hosted such celebrities as NBA's Reggie Miller, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kelly Hu, Wayne Brady, Johnny Depp, Playboy Playmates, Jon Lovitt, Cory Huntington, Bruno Mars and much more. Tanoue actually started his career in the art world as a professional dancer. For eight years, he traveled throughout the United Sates and Canada, and performed the national 20th Century Fox's Dance Fever and on the Hawaiian Moving Company. Tanoue's talent of taking pictures of some of the dancers and for doing make-up ultimately led him to his passion for professional photography.
