I contacted Ron for work to remodel my bathroom and repair and paint my garage ceiling. Ron and his team did a phenomenal job for a reasonable price. I am extremely satisfied and would highly recommend! They were on time, professional, cleaned up and paid attention to every detail. Super happy!

Tom quoted a very competitive price for installation of three ceiling fan boxes with wiring and the relocation of two switches and a wall outlet. We had to reschedule due to a family emergency on his side but we rescheduled promptly and the work was completed in a little over one day with very good competency. His guys were very very clean and kind. Will look to Affordable Handyman in the future.

I had the walls and tile of my shower replaced. Even though I set him up for success by doing the tear out of my shower myself and bought all the supplies. Ron came in, did exactly as we talked about, he had a tile guy to do the rest of the job and everything was done quickly and completely and I could not be happier with both the work done and what it cost which I thought was very reasonable. And what made me even happier, though I wish Ron had brought it up but glad his tile guy did. He suggested tiling the ceiling of the shower which I had not considered and needed to be sanded and painted anyhow. It finished off the job beautifully. I am happy to recommend Ron and if need arrises will happily hire him again.

David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Our front room entry door needed adjustment and Brandon did a great job assessing the situation and properly mounting the door. He worked very professionally and did a quality job. What's even better, when I told him that we had icicles and moisture in the entry room his winter, he checked the windows and ceiling and found the issue. He then sealed the cracks that had let the moisture in as an extra service, which I highly appreciated. I will definitely work with him again if I need repairs. Thank you.

Ed was very friendly and we easily trusted him in our house. He did a wonderful job finishing a drop ceiling and the bathroom floor looks nice. We added some extra trim along the edges to better finish the overall appearance.

We had an area walled to create a bedroom. The work Mark did was superior. You would think it was part of original construction. He installed ceiling fans in the bedrooms where there were no fixtures. Mark will be our go to source for construction needs. HIGHLY recommended. AND we're thoroughly pleased.

Great service and a very hard working friendly staff. We are very happy with Perfect Painters. They came over to give me a quote within hours, even on a short notice. The only and minor reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because although everything looked perfect when they were still here, there is a small wall that needed another coat after they left. When that wall completely dried, it needed another coat to fully cover the previous color (bright green) of the wall. My husband had to use the leftover (neutral color) paint to do another coat to fully cover it up. But they did a wonderful job repairing the ceiling that had water damage, and painted the whole ceiling seamlessly. Overall, we are very happy with this company. Will definitely use their service again and will definitely refer them to friends and family.

Ed has done a few projects for me and I've been extremely pleased with his work. He repaired my kitchen ceiling after a soffit was removed and the ceiling is perfect. He also painted my entire condo from floor to ceiling and did an incredible job! He's extremely meticulous and a perfectionist. I also feel very comfortable leaving him alone to work at my place. Every night I came home, my place was immaculate and the paint and tools were even perfectly placed in the same spot every evening. The name of Ed's business "Perfect Interiors, LLC" is exactly that! You will have an excellent client experience trusting Ed with your remodeling, painting, construction plans. Thanks!

The team at Jates is extremely easy to work with! They painted a portion of our ceiling and repaired a door. The color-match they had to do for the ceiling is seamless. Everything from the proposal to completion of work went smooth. They were reliable, punctual and the work looks great. I would not hesitate to recommend them and would definitely work with them again.

The guys at K7 Construction are fantastic. Very professional, respectful and they do great work! I am a life-long Naperville resident and have recommended these guys to a number of friends and family. They replaced my water-heater on extremely short notice, installed a junction box and ceiling fan along with hiding my messy tv cable wires behind my walls. Any job, big or small, these guys have a customer for life.

We made the right decision when hiring Mike to finish our bathroom. Work included taping, mudding, and sanding the drywall on walls and ceiling. Tiling around our shower (excellent work!). Installing new faucet, sink and vanity (including the plumbing). Installing all trim, molding, baseboards. Priming and painting. We really appreciate that throughout the week, he kept everything neat and tidy (really, we were kind of amazed at how clean the area would look by the time we got home from work for the amount of work going on in there each day).

Great work! My family owns a rental property and Mr. Knight worked to get the place ready to rent again. He did drywall work, laid tile, installed a ceiling fan, repaired a ceiling fan, painted, and cleaned. Good work and reasonable prices. He needs steady help to ensure that his work is done in a more timely fashion, I plan to work with him again!

We have worked with Beacon for two jobs, one big and one small. They replaced our beat-up old parquet floor with carpeting, we changed the plans on installation day, and they still did a fantastic job on time! And we hired them for a complete basement finishing job....taking a big empty unfinished basement and doing everything, from pulling permits to cooperating in the design, building walls and floors and ceiling, involving electricians and HVAC... resulting in a spacious, comfortable, beautiful four-room basement. Beautiful work at a fair price, on-time, and all their crews were simply delightful to work with!

Jason installed new interior doors and closet doors in my home. He also installed a new ceiling fan and fixed a window that wouldn't stay up. Everything looked and worked great. Knowledgeable, polite service at a fair price. I will use them again!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
