Introduction: Outline Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Chicago. Its principal, Laura Metcalfe, has 10 years of experience in the high-end residential design industry (both in New York City and Chicago, combined). Laura has worked for several of the top design firms in her field, including David Easton Inc, Thom Filicia Inc, and Branca Inc. She has been privileged to work on projects of various scales and design aesthetic all over the world. Laura created Outline Interiors in 2014 to bring her design and project management skills to a new clientele. Outline Interiors is passionate about working with clients that are perhaps new to the design process, or young professionals who are ready to invest in their living space, but don't know where to begin. Working with Clients that are new to the interior design process is something that Laura enjoys. Seeing how they engage in the design process and their reaction when they have a finished product is incredibly fulfilling. Most people don't realize how wonderful their Living Spaces can be with a little work and creativity.

Laura designed a furniture plan and decorated my one bedroom garage apartment in Houston. The layout of the space was a challenge to furnish, but she was able to work up a unique furniture plan that I never could have dreamt up. She also sourced interesting, one-of-a-kind pieces to fill the space with, keeping in mind my taste, preferences, and budget. Surprisingly, working remotely and never having physically been to the apartment wasn't an issue at all, and when I had questions or ideas, Laura was always quick to respond and provide feedback. This was my first experience using an interior designer and I highly recommend it. Laura is professional, easy to work with, and truly talented at what she does. I'm very happy with the finished product and will definitely be using Outline Interiors in the future.

Laura designed the nursery for our baby boy and did a beautiful job. I'm the type of person who knows what I like and do not like, but I have no idea where to begin when it comes to coordinating pieces and putting a room together. I knew I wanted a room that he would be able to grow with and did not have an overwhelming theme, but I did not have a very clear vision. Laura helped me refine my ideas and she came up with a design that was everything I wanted and more. The physical space provided certain limitations, as it is a small room with white walls we cannot paint, a large window, and old hardwood floors. Also, we are located in Los Angeles, so this was a remote project for her. She was very thoughtful in choosing furniture that maximized the small space and still allowed us to have the traditional nursery furniture pieces. There is plenty of open room for toys, books, and floor space for playing. She chose simple pieces that balance nicely with the colorful elements of the room and incorporated items that provide a stimulating and sensory environment for my little one (a shaggy rug, colorful geometric mobile, bold striped curtains, large wall map decal, etc.) The nursery is my favorite room in our house, and it is so comforting to see the smile on my son's face when he is in his room; I have never seen a baby be so engaged with his space. Laura did not just design a room that looks nice, but is mostly for sleeping and diaper changes. She created an place where every element serves a purpose and provides a comforting and engaging environment for baby boy. She was very reliable, communicative, and easy to work with (even from a distance). I look forward to working with Laura again when we buy a house in the next few years.

My husband and I recently purchased our first home and are moving from a 1 bedroom apartment into a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. We were both overwhelmed with the thought of decorating and filling an entire home! We typically would not be ones to hire an interior designer, however hiring Laura has been one of the best decisions that we could have made! She has helped us with everything from paint colors to furniture and layout. I have gone from completely overwhelmed to now being so excited to move into our new, beautifully decorated home. Laura is not in our same city, but that has not posed a problem at all. Not only has she been extremely knowledgeable, she has also been mindful of our wants and needs as well as our budget. She is always friendly and quick to respond to any questions or requests that we have. I will definitely refer Laura to many of our family and friends with design needs - I am convinced that she is the best!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Outline Interiors bills an hourly fee for time spent on the project, as well as a small design fee on items specified and purchased through us.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to meet with the client first to get a better sense of their project scope, aesthetic preferences, budget, and overall personality. Following this meeting, I submit a design contract for review that details the billing structure, confirms the scope, and includes an estimated time billing amount. Once the contract is confirmed and signed, I begin drawings, sourcing items and schedule the first design presentation.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Interior Design, cum laude from Texas Christian University. My experience working for some of the top firms in country based in NYC and Chicago have really prepared me for any situation.
