About

Based out of Chicago, IL, I have 10+ years of music teaching experience and even more years performing and composing professionally. While my main instruments are drum set, marimba and guitar, I teach improvisation and composition on any/all instruments you want to learn. I believe that all living beings are born musical. My goal is to help people unlock their innate musical talents, with a focus on fluency and expressiveness. My passion is combining everything I have learned and creating something new in original music and improvisational contexts. I compose for and perform with a number of Chicago-based musicians and bands, including, Family Junket, Jazz Robots, Seres de Luz, and Berta Bigtoe. I have a BA in Music from Macalester College and studied music in Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship. With ten years of experience teaching people of all ages in music schools and private lessons, I am excited to meet new students and help you reach your musical goals!

Jonah is an amazing teacher. I honestly did not expect to be playing so confidently with just a few lessons under my belt, but having the freedom to do so has made learning a new instrument incredibly enjoyable. Jonah also understands that the best way to learn is to start playing with others and has provided very affordable ways to do so. If I could rate him more than 5 stars I absolutely would!

Details: 26 - 44 years old • No formal training • Understands note durations and rests • Traditional drum kit • Rock • No, but the student is planning to purchase drums and would like the teacher's advice on it • 30 minutes • At the pro’s location

I feel so grateful to have found Jonah and cannot thank him enough for all the knowledge he has already imparted on me. After only a couple lessons with him, he has transformed the way I experience music. Working with him, I now listen to songs with a wider sense. He embodies the idea that Music is not only a song, but a language, a layered dance, and ultimately a living, breathing, changing thing. The incredible part about being his student is that he teaches you how to use your instrument to become a part of Music’s beautiful conversation.

Details: 18 - 25 years old • No formal training; some self-taught experience • Yes, can read guitar tabs • Acoustic • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has an instrument • 60 minutes • At the pro’s location
