Introduction: Hello! I’m new to Thumbtack, so I only have a few reviews, but I have been an advanced math and science tutor, as well as a technical writer, for almost 30 years!
My favorite subjects to tutor are AP Physics, AP Calculus, engineering physics/chemistry, premed chemistry and biology, anatomy, and physiology; Precalculus, College Algebra/Trig, Geometry, Algebra, AP Chemistry, AP Biology (and all related, prerequisite science courses), as well as application essay writing! I also enjoy editing scientific and technical papers, grant applications, and essays.
My life's mission is to learn, to teach, to inspire, to help, and have fun!
My unique approach to tutoring:
As a tutor, I join students on their path to learning and achieving their desired grades (as opposed to showing up for a tutoring session and then disappearing until the next one). To that end, I review all topics and work out all problem sets ahead of time, so I am maximally prepared for efficient teaching during sessions. I also provide the following free services for each student: creation of custom-made practice problem sets and test preparation materials; custom made solution videos; between-session help on problems by text or email; study planning strategies; syllabus and coursework review; parent/student conferences; and general educational goal-setting discussions.
All tutoring sessions are conducted online using videoconferencing tools and an online, shared blackboard on which the student and I can both write.
I do not charge for the first tutoring session. This gives the student a chance to get to know me, and it gives me the opportunity to take my time and learn how a student learns - all without the pressure of time or money. I get paid for live sessions only. All other help that I provide by text or email, including guidance on problem solving, reviewing students' work, sending suggestions and extra practice problems with solutions, is free and unlimited.
My formal education is in medicine, engineering, and Spanish. Because I spent 29 years of my life as a student, I have a solid understanding of the demands of student life, and I believe I've acquired many techniques for academic success.
About my academic background: I am a board-certified medical doctor (MD) and have master’s and bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering.
Because I love teaching, I have been a tutor, a teaching assistant, and/or a classroom teacher at every step along my academic and professional path.
Last but not least, I practice academic honesty and ask that my students and parents do the same.
