FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Data, data, data! I want to know everything I can about your pet's behavior. I'll ask questions to get an overall idea, but more than anything, I want to engage your pet and see first hand what is happening and what needs to change. Then, I will show you how behavioral science dictates we proceed to bringing about those changes! Once I get the ball rolling, I will pass the reins to you and help hone your training skills, leaving you in a position of knowledge and skill.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have read nearly a dozen different books by the world's top animal behavioral scientists, trainers, and zoologists, and have coupled that education with practical experience with my clients. I have successfully taught clients to eliminate excessive barking, to treat separation anxiety, to socialize pets, to treat leash reactivity, to prepare for the arrival of a puppy, and of course, teach adorable tricks. I also work for a busy dog daycare where I routinely supervise as many as 80-120 dogs at once.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I learned about scientific positive reinforcement animal training while raising a puppy with a science-based dog trainer. I was introduced to the works of Patricia McConnell, Karen Pryor, and Jean Donaldson, and continued my own research from there. I began pursuing animal training professionally after my exasperated girlfriend pointed out that I immediately tune her out whenever a stray cat wanders near, or a dog walks by with its owner. She said, "Why don't you just work with animals?" and I could think of no good reasons why not. I have been vigorously studying animal behavior for over 3 years, and have helped numerous clients in big and small ways.
