Ron has done many home improvements for me over the years and has helped to make my home look great! He has done everything from electrical (changing all my lighting in my house and one of them was from a 2 story entry way Yikes!), plumbing ( new kitchen sink, garbage disposal and sump pump) to adding crown molding and glass to my kitchen cabinets and now they look custom. He is friendly, prompt, very fair pricing, very knowledgable in all home improvements and best of all he is a perfectionist. He will not leave the job until it is perfect and the customer is very happy. He did new tile in my mom's kitchen and now she loves him too! I've delt with many contractors over the years and really Ron is the best.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

I highly recommend Power Up Electric. Great communication, experienced electrician, fair prices and prompt service. I needed a complicated removal of wiring for a hot tub and job was done in 2 hours!

Andy was extremely efficient and his work really showed. We had an electrician come in before and they stated something couldn’t be done. Andy proved this guy wrong and completed the jobs without a hiccup. Thank you Andy we will be in touch for our next big project!

I had scheduled another electrician to come out and then metal a ceiling fan and he never showed up. I reached out to Al and he responded immediately and was here the very next morning. He did and great job and his pricing was more than reasonable. We will be hiring him again in the future for any electrical needs!

I had to hire an electrician remotely I liked that this pro always responded swiftly. Seems like he did a good job. I do gave a grievance with him. It may have been a communication complication (his English is a little broken), but I caught him being a little dishonest about a different switch in the house. In the end he fixed it for a fair price and his work seems to be good.

I logged on to seek an electrician and within 30 minutes, Ricky, from I Love Electrical responded. We set up a time and date that was just 4 days after. Ricky was on time, professional and courteous. I had 4 fixtures replaced in my kitchen. He had the job completed in about an hour. I am so pleased. I feel like a have a new kitchen! Would call them again.

George came over to offer me a free quote and we negotiated a good and fair price. Then once we set up the install/electrical work, he and his team (1 other electrician) got the work done in just a few hours. He was punctual, communicated with me throughout the project, was precise with cuts, and did a great job. I'll definitely hire him again for future electrical work. As a matter of fact, he already completed a small project for me at another property.

Went online to look for an electrician needed to bring power up to TV mounted on fireplace. Dominick replied to request and provided dates and times for his availability. He communicated prior to coming onsite and was right on time. Even though Dominick ran into some bumps along the way he still charged the original quote. He was thorough and a complete professional. Not only did he run the power where we wanted he patched up the drywall. I will be doing my basement soon and will be using Dominick and his company to handle all the electrical work for that project.

Andy Pascu did an outstanding job installing new wiring, junction boxes, and light fixtures in difficult to access locations without removing the ceiling drywall. Not removing drywall meant the job was more work for him, but it saved me the time, expensive, and inconvenience of a ceiling repair. Other electricians said they would remove the ceiling drywall to install the fixtures. Andy quoted a reasonable price via Thumbtack email and that was the amount I paid after the job was completed. He made every effort to do what I was asking to be done. It is clear to me why he is a top rated pro on Thumbtack.
