Doug has been a great realtor, and far less pushy than what I've experienced with realtors in the past. A refreshing change. So good in fact, that I gave his name to my son (who previously listed his home two years ago with another realtor, and had no luck selling). Doug worked with my son to list his house, and successfully handled both sale and purchase of new home. I highly recommend Doug for your RE needs.

My wife and I had an excellent experience with our realtor, Jay. His knowledge, expertise, and most importantly, communication was top notch. He went above and beyond to make the process of selling my home a breeze. When the time came to purchase our next home we had no doubt that Jay will deliver by getting us a good deal with his negotiating skills. He always made himself available. I definitely recommend him and will use him for all my real estate purchases.

I consider myself very lucky to have come across Chicagoland Realty Group. I've used them for the purposes of property management and sales of my properties. On all occasions, I have received a prompt response. If there are any issues with the properties, I am made aware very promptly. Otherwise, their service is very seamless. In addition every year during tax season, their systematic record keeping helps me tremendously on managing my returns.

I always believe the client’s needs and concerns are my number one priority. My mandate is to work with their best interest in mind – all the time. I am a dedicated and committed broker who consistently goes above and beyond for my customers. My knowledge of the area and the business make me an ideal choice for helping with all your real estate needs. I will be there from the beginning to the end of the process and will happily help you open the door to your new home. I have been living in Chicago for over 15 years and have been involved with local real estate, full time, for over 10 years. I have successfully worked with out-of-town clients as well as local, traditional sales as well as estate sales and foreclosures, investors and homeowners. We engaged Gershon in September 2016 to rent out our house starting in November. We needed to find tenants quickly because we were relocating out of the country, and we weren’t very confident in our ability to get our preferred rental rate since November is an off-peak period for rentals. Gershon was extremely positive and confident from the beginning. He made the case for actually asking a higher price than we initially wanted. He was very well prepared, showing us comps that rented quickly and backed up his suggestion of a higher price. His suggested marketing strategy reflected familiarity with the market in our neighborhood. His plan was to market both using traditional real estate marketing tools (MLS, etc), as well as targeted marketing for the demographic by posting the listing in all the neighborhood public spaces. While the thought of posting signs did occur to us, Gershon’s involvement made it much easier since he took care of the logistics of these postings himself. Once we engaged Gershon, he was extremely on-point. He was able to set up a photoshoot of the house right away, and did it in such a way that it was minimally disruptive to us. All the aspects of his listing, both hardcopy and digital were produced in a highly professional fashion. In addition to MLS and flyer posting in synagogues which we’ve discussed, he also aggressively marketed our house on social media. As a result of all these, Gershon was able to find us very suitable tenants, who agreed to full rate within 2 weeks of listing the property. Once we decided to move forward with these tenants, Gershon continued to help, explaining the nuances of the process and making sure everything goes smoothly. This was greatly helpful as we are first-time landlords. Throughout the whole process, Gershon was extremely easy to reach and responsive. We were extremely pleased both with his professionalism throughout the process and with the results, and would enthusiastically choose to use him in the future.

I needed assistance in purchasing my first home. I came across Mr. Trujillo after a couple of failed attempts with other Realtors. When we met to discuss my housing needs and what I was looking for, I knew I had found the right Realtor for me. Mr. Trujillo answered all of my questions and guided me through the home buying process; which put my mind at ease. I definitely would recommend him to everyone I come across. Even though I wasn't purchasing a million dollar home, Mr. Trujillo gave me the service of someone that was. Thank you very much. Teresa C.

I would definitely recommend Borys! This was not my first selling of a home but was the first time I really felt the agent knew his business. He came to initial meeting with very helpful information and explained his process in a way that definitely showed his expertise in real estate. Super responsive as if you are his only client! Friendly and professional. Thanks for helping me sell my house!

From the very first time we contacted Emerson to buy a home he was there to help us every step of the way. He took us to homes that were under our budget and homes that were over our budget just to get an idea of what we wanted on our wish list. He never rushed us and always got answers to our questions. We can't say enough good things about Emerson and will definately use him again should we need to sell and buy another home

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a real estate agent do?

Real estate agents help their clients buy, sell, and rent commercial and residential properties. There are also real estate agents that sell industrial and agricultural real estate, but the majority sell residential properties. To become a real estate agent, you must be at least 18 years old, successfully complete real estate courses, and pass a real estate exam. Be sure to check for any required licensing, too. Often real estate agents will earn 5 percent to 6 percent of the total home sale price for their work in representing their client. Typically this commission is split equally between the buyer’s agent and the seller’s agent. Here is an overview of what a real estate agent does, according to the United States Department of Labor:

      • Represent clients who are looking to buy, sell and rent properties.
      • Stay knowledgeable about regional real estate prices, mortgages, market conditions and related information, and advise clients accordingly.
      • Determine competitive market prices by comparing properties.
      • Create and publicize lists of properties for sale, including details such as location and features.
      • Market properties through advertisements, open houses and listing services.
      • Show prospective buyers or renters properties.
      • Present purchase offers to sellers for consideration.
      • Mediate negotiations between buyer and seller.
      • Ensure that all terms of purchase contracts are met.
      • Prepare documents, such as loyalty contracts, purchase agreements and deeds.

What's the difference between a real estate broker and an agent?

Real estate agents and real estate brokers both help clients buy, sell, and rent residential and commercial properties. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, real estate brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Real estate agents cannot have their own real estate office and must work under a broker. Real estate brokers often have real estate firms and employ real estate agents. Those real estate agents may be employees of the firm, or they may work on contract and earn part of any commission they bring into the firm.

If you are a homeowner ready to sell or a buyer in the market for a new home, either a real estate broker or a real estate agent can help you achieve your goal. What is more important than their title is their track record and client success stories. When interviewing real estate agents or brokers to help you buy or sell a home, ask about their recent sales history as compared with the original listing prices. If you’re selling a home, ask how they would market your home and what price they would list it at. Whether you hire an agent or broker, you want a professional who will have your best interests at heart.

What should you look for in a real estate agent?

When you’re hiring a real estate agent you want to find a qualified pro who can negotiate the best deal for your home — whether you’re buying or selling. Reading reviews will help you weed out obvious bad operators; you want to work with someone who treats their clients with fairness and respect. That said, you also want someone who can play hardball and maximize your real estate deal. Ask for references from recent clients, and be sure to call them.

Experts encourage you to interview more than one prospective real estate agent before hiring. A home sale or home purchase is a big deal — sometimes the biggest deal in a person’s life — and you want to find an agent who will work hard for you. In today’s market, having a real estate agent who is social media savvy and has an attractive online presence is critical. Ask the agent how they plan to market your house. Review their listings, and ask yourself if they have professional photos with homes that are professionally staged. If the answer is no, they might not have the marketing savvy you’re looking for. Ask what price they would list your house at and why. Pay attention to how they communicate with you during your initial interviewing phase. Are they too busy to respond for several days? Are they clear and helpful? This information is a clue to how they’ll engage during the entire process.

What do real estate agents charge?

Real estate agents typically don’t charge a set rate to their clients, but rather earn a commission on the price of the final home sale. In traditional real estate, there is a buyer’s agent and a seller’s agent. The two agents receive 5 percent to 6 percent of the final home sale price and split it evenly, meaning they each earn roughly 2.5 percent to 3 percent of the total home sale. If you are a home seller, you may have fees associated with the sale that are above and beyond the commission the agents earn. The real estate agent may have you pay marketing fees, MLS fees, early cancellation fees, or more. Always ask pricing details before signing a contract so you clearly understand your financial obligations. Here are some of the average (and common) costs that can arise when selling a home:

      • Home inspection: $200-$350 or more, depending on region.
      • Home appraisal: $250-$400 or more, depending on region.
      • Professional real estate photography: $275-$550 or more, depending on photographer, square footage of house, and special requests like sunset shots.
      • Closing costs: Often split between the seller and buyer. An average range for the buyer to pay is between 3 percent and 4 percent, with the seller paying a lower fee at 1 percent to 3 percent of the home’s price.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
