J&R Accounting is one of the best Tax preparation services in the area. I hired them to prepare my 2014 Tax return, they went above and beyond my request and provided additional support with no additional charges. The quote was fair. I have to point out that Shaimal is really a customer centric person. I will absolutely come back next year and re-hire J&R to prepare my 2015 Tax return.... Way to go J&R , keep up the good work!

David has been preparing our corporate taxes for a decade. His work has been outstanding and because of it, we have never had any issues with state or federal agencies. His guidance has been instrumental in establishing accounting records for our business that are professional and workable. He has my highest recommendation.

This is my second year filing with Larry. He clearly outlines what you need to do, he'll meet with you to talk through it or you can just email him everything. I preferred meeting in-person because I didn't understand a few requirements around my rental property. Turns out I wasn't accounting for some of my costs and he figured out why I should get back additional money. He also found a mistake in my 2014 tax return (done by somebody else) and is re-filing that return for me.

Love working with JPA. Joanne is very knowledgeable and eager to help out whenever she can. Every time I texted her with a question, she responded with an answer right away. I initially hired her to help me incorporate my small business but after working with her I decided to have her handle my personal accounting as well. Would highly recommend.

Margaret has been my personal accountant for over a decade and a half. She was referred to me by a friend during a time of tax trouble that I had unwittingly gotten myself into and I will go nowhere else. I have a unique situation where in one of my professions I am an independent contractor with several business expenses. On the other hand my side hustle consists of an hourly pay rate plus tips. Margaret makes it all so easy. I could not do this without her. Every year she makes a stressful time easier and streamlined. It is almost as if she is a therapist in a time of need. Margaret will always be my accountant and I recommend her highly to anyone, no matter what their situation. Margaret can handle anything with professionalism plus she adds the human component to each individual. Every tax season I laugh at all of the commercials advertising big accounting firms and am so relieved I have Margaret.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.
