After dealing with other sewer contractors fumbling around in the dark, when Tim Roberts came to our rescue we were quite impressed by is knowledge, his skill, his professionalism & above all his integrity. He had the right answers to resolve the situation. We are now waiting for his estimate regardless we would hire him in a heartbeat our search has ended! Thanks Tim and thanks to Thumbtack for the referral!!!

I found ISA to be one of those rare businesses where you actually receive what you pay for. Their jobs were to tile two bath rooms and a family room, hang 10 interior doors, install extensive back splash and replace two bathroom vanities. One rare quality we found with ISA is their punctuality. A customer will find appointments kept and punctuality maintained ... a trait definitely not belonging to a good number of contractors today. We found Salvo and Kemmel (spelling) personal and friendly to be with during the arduous turmoil of home remodeling. Perhaps the best accolade a customer can provide to any business is "yes, I would hire them again"!

Tim & his apprentice came & installed two new faucets for me. They did a great job at a fair price, and he was also a pleasure to talk to.. a real nice guy, recommended for any plumbing job. He also has several other subcontractors that can do any job as well. I will definitely call back for a few other larger jobs.

Bradley was able to pinpoint location of a leak in a vent that was causing sewer odors in an apartment that 3 other plumbers weren't able to find. He was also able to fix the leak with some creative work to keep damage to the floor at a minimum. Very reasonable price too. Bradley's definitely my new plumber.

I needed help installing legs on a couch. I had ordered a couch from Wayfair that came without predrilled holes for the leg assembly. The contractor that Wayfair referred me to kept delaying, so I turned to Doyle for assistance. Within 24 hours of first contact, the legs were installed on my couch. Doyle was very responsive, incredibly professional, and completed the fix in no time at all. He is very friendly and took the time to explain to me how I could do similar fixes myself in the future. I give him my highest possible recommendation.

Master Bathroom remodel done with expertise: demolition, tub, shower, tile, vanity, lights, sink, tile, grout, paint, hardware, faucets, valves. I had a contractor bail on the project, after doing the demolition and building the room (incorrectly). Ron came to the rescue with a professional demeanor, prompt arrival to quote, and explained the work involved. Not only was Ron able to work within the conditions, he reconfigured the other contractor's work to not require a complete demolition again. Ron has a knowledge of building codes and built the bathroom properly, including: reframe shower cubicle, laid concrete backer boards, repaired tub surround, installed tile straight, even, consistent, connected plumbing, electric, fixtures (very heavy stuff, but he handled it well with his colleague). I trusted Ron in my home, with the deposit and he was enjoyable to converse with and let me know in great detail about the project (before performing work). I'm pleased with the results and everything is still working great after 3 months, no leaks and nothing has broken.

I googled around this morning to see if I could find an estimate for rodding my basement sewer pipe and I stumbled across Thumbtack. I filled out the form, did some work for a while, went to get some coffee, came back, and had a couple replies. Bob's was the one I went with; the interface told me he was available at 4:30 but Bob said nope he could do 2pm though -- and he was at my house with his guys and his equipment within 15 minutes. He was so helpful, explaining what had happened, what the larger issue was, what I should look for in terms of "when it goes sideways again," how often I should expect to deal with this, and what my big next steps would be re: a permanent fix. And they fixed my problem and were super professional and nice, and nobody talked down to me EVER (this is a huuuuuuge plus if you are a female dealing with folks in this industry, in my not-too-limited experience), and guess what: my coffee was still hot as he and his team drove off. Absolutely great guys - will totally go to them again. :)

All State Renovations is your one stop shop for all your remodel needs. If you have one of Ray's business cards, on the back it says "Turn your home into a masterpiece". Well that's exactly what he did for my bathroom. Ray was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to do business with. His crew is exactly the same. They were always on time, cleaned up after the work everyday and even said Good bye every night. That's a trait you cannot find with everyone. Ray would drop in every day to check on his crew and to make sure I was completely satisfied with how the job was going. He is also very knowledgeable and if you are stuck on what look to give your new interior, Ray has a million ideas. He even took care of mistakes by a previous contractor I had the misfortune of working with all at a very fair and reasonable price. I could go on and on. He will be coming back for my kitchen and lighting in my living room. Thanks Ray and All State Renovations.

Paris and Albert were a great pair to work with. Paris had excellent communication from beginning to end, he explained everything they would do and would need to purchase for the job. They were also accommodating when I asked for additional help with picking up and hanging artwork. I researched a lot of contractors and handyman and they were by far the most reasonably priced. Would highly recommend it to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
